CVE-2026-97631

CRITICAL POC Pub 22/10 Upd 30/10

Overview

The vulnerability in TianoCore EDK2 is a classic buffer overflow caused by incorrect calculation of buffer sizes leading to out-of-bounds writes. This flaw arises within the BIOS component, where insufficient validation of input data length allows memory corruption. The root cause is improper boundary checks during buffer allocation or manipulation in the firmware code paths handling remote input.

Vulnerability Description

EDK2 contains a vulnerability in BIOS where a user may cause “Out-of-bounds Write”, Classic Buffer Overflow, and “Incorrect Calculation of Buffer Size” by remote access. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to arbitrary code execution. It could also impact Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability.

Impact

An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code within the BIOS environment, potentially gaining persistent control over the system firmware. This can lead to complete compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected device. The attacker can manipulate system boot processes, bypass security controls, and disrupt normal operations, resulting in severe business impact including data breaches, system downtime, or persistent malware implantation.

Solution

Users of TianoCore EDK2 should apply the security updates referenced in the official GitHub advisory GHSA-99cj-7hg9-mp4m, which addresses this vulnerability. The advisory provides specific patches to correct buffer size calculations and improve input validation in the BIOS firmware. Administrators should follow the update instructions detailed at the GitHub security advisory page to ensure the firmware is upgraded to a secure version. No alternative workarounds are documented in the advisory.
