CVE-2026-9055
Overview
This is a privilege escalation flaw rooted in missing authorization checks on the customer update endpoint of the Amelia booking plugin for WordPress. The endpoint accepts an attacker-controlled 'type' parameter and uses it to assign the caller's role without verifying that the caller is entitled to that role. A second defect compounds it: passing 'externalId' as 0 makes the plugin provision a new WordPress user carrying the wpamelia-manager role instead of linking to an existing account.
Vulnerability Description
The Booking for Appointments and Events Calendar – Amelia (Premium) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Privilege Escalation in versions 8.0 - 9.6.2. This is due to insufficient validation of the attacker-controlled 'type' parameter in the customer update endpoint, which allows customers to set their role to 'manager' and trigger creation of a WordPress user with the wpamelia-manager role when the 'externalId' parameter is set to 0. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to escalate their privileges to administrator by first elevating to the manager role, then creating a provider entity linked to an administrator user ID and overwriting that administrator's password.
Impact
An attacker needs no account and no user interaction: a crafted request to the booking endpoint promotes the caller to manager, and from there a provider entity can be bound to an existing administrator user ID, overwriting that administrator's password. The result is full administrative control of the WordPress site, which in practice means arbitrary plugin and theme installation, database access through the site, and a foothold for hosting webshells. Any site running the Premium plugin with public booking enabled is reachable from the internet.
Solution
Update the Booking for Appointments and Events Calendar - Amelia (Premium) plugin to a release above 9.6.2; the vendor changelog at wpamelia.com documents the fixed version. Until the update is applied, restrict access to the plugin's AJAX endpoints at the web server or WAF layer and audit wp_users for accounts holding the wpamelia-manager role or recent administrator password changes. The Wordfence threat-intel entry carries the detection signatures.
