CVE-2026-77136
Overview
The TYPO3 powermail extension takes the raw value of the form field designated as sender_name and hands it to a Fluid View as template source, then renders it. Because the value is treated as template code rather than as data, submitted Fluid syntax is parsed and its ViewHelpers are invoked. This is server-side template injection: the boundary between user input and template is absent, and no sanitization runs before rendering.
Vulnerability Description
The extension passes the raw value of a form field configured as "This field contains the name of the sender" directly into a Fluid View as template source, without any sanitization, and renders it. An anonymous, unauthenticated user can submit Fluid template syntax in that field to execute arbitrary Fluid ViewHelpers leading to disclosure of server configuration, environment variables and application source, and potentially remote code execution. Exploitation requires only that a form field is configured as the sender_name field, a common and default-adjacent Powermail configuration. No authentication or user interaction beyond a normal form submission is required. This vulnerability is reported to be actively exploited in the wild.
Impact
Any anonymous visitor who can submit the form can execute arbitrary Fluid ViewHelpers on the server, which discloses server configuration, environment variables and application source, and can escalate to remote code execution. Exploitation requires only a normal form submission with no authentication and no interaction beyond that, and the vulnerable setup is a common, close-to-default powermail configuration in which a field is designated as sender_name. The advisory reports the flaw as actively exploited in the wild.
Solution
Apply the powermail update referenced in TYPO3 security advisory TYPO3-EXT-SA-2026-022. As an immediate mitigation before the extension can be updated, remove the sender_name designation from form fields so no submitted value reaches the Fluid View as template source. Given the reports of active exploitation, review web server logs for form submissions containing Fluid syntax and check for environment or configuration disclosure in responses.
