Overview
This vulnerability is an authentication bypass in Mikrotik RouterOS's IPv4 UDP testing feature. The root cause lies in the acceptance of a "related" btest connection before the primary session completes authentication, allowing unauthenticated clients to initiate tests. Additionally, improper handling of packet size intervals leads to unsigned integer underflow and kernel packet buffer misuse, affecting the RouterOS kernel's network packet processing component.
Vulnerability Description
RouterOS accepts a "related" btest connection before the corresponding primary session has completed authentication. An unauthenticated client can use this state to start an IPv4 UDP test. With "random-data=false", the sender transmits an uninitialized tail from a kernel packet buffer. A separate unchecked, inverted packet-size interval causes unsigned integer underflow, anomalously large fragmented output, and can restart the RouterOS kernel. This issue was fixed in versions: 6.49.21 (Long-term), 7.23.4 (Long-term) and 7.24.2 (Stable)
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability to initiate IPv4 UDP tests on the RouterOS device, causing anomalous packet fragmentation and kernel restarts. This can lead to denial of service conditions by destabilizing the router's kernel. No user interaction or credentials are required, enabling remote disruption of network availability and potential operational outages in environments relying on affected Mikrotik RouterOS versions.
Solution
Apply the vendor-released patches for Mikrotik RouterOS: update to version 6.49.21 (Long-term), 7.23.4 (Long-term), or 7.24.2 (Stable) as detailed in the Mikrotik security advisory at https://mikrotik.com/supportsec/september-2026-vulnerability/.
