CVE-2026-58704
Overview
This vulnerability is a permission bypass caused by a logic error within the Cellular Modem component of Google Android. The flaw arises from improper enforcement of access control checks, allowing unauthorized operations to proceed. The affected code fails to correctly validate permissions, leading to an escalation of privilege without requiring additional execution rights.
Vulnerability Description
In Cellular Modem, there is a possible permission bypass due to a logic error in the code. This could lead to remote (proximal/adjacent) escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.
Impact
An attacker within network proximity can exploit this flaw to escalate privileges on the device without requiring user interaction or prior authentication. This could enable unauthorized access to sensitive modem functions, potentially compromising confidentiality, integrity, and availability of cellular communications. The escalation may facilitate lateral movement or further compromise of the Android system, impacting device security and user data confidentiality.
Solution
Google has addressed this vulnerability in the Android Security Bulletin dated September 1, 2026, affecting Pixel devices and broader Android builds. Users and administrators should apply the security updates released in this bulletin promptly. Detailed patch instructions and version-specific fixes are available at https://source.android.com/docs/security/bulletin/pixel/2026/2026-09-01, which provides vendor-recommended remediation steps and firmware updates to mitigate the issue.
