CVE-2026-48027
Overview
The vulnerability involves a supply chain compromise where a maliciously altered version (18.95.0) of the Nx Console extension was published briefly on the Visual Studio Marketplace and OpenVSX. This tampered package contains unauthorized code injected into the extension's distribution, affecting the integrity of the Nx Console user interface component for Nx & Lerna. The root cause is the introduction of malicious payload within the extension's published package, bypassing normal validation or review processes.
Vulnerability Description
Nx Console is the user interface for Nx & Lerna. On 19 May 2026, a malicious version of Nx Console, 18.95.0, was published at 12:30 PM UTC and removed soon after at 12:48 PM UTC, leaving it available for ~18 minutes in Visual Studio Marketplace. For OpenVSX, the problem was detected later, and the compromised version was available from 12:33 UTC to 13:09 UTC (~36 minutes). Version 18.100.0 of Nx Console is not compromised and users may remediate by upgrading to that version.
Impact
An attacker can execute arbitrary code on the host system by tricking users into installing or updating to the compromised Nx Console version without requiring any authentication or user interaction beyond the update process. This can lead to full system compromise, data exfiltration, or lateral movement within development environments. The supply chain nature of the attack means trusted development tools are used as vectors, increasing the potential for widespread impact across organizations relying on Nx Console for their workflows.
Solution
Users must upgrade Nx Console to version 18.100.0 or later, which is confirmed free of the injected malicious code. The vendor has published a security advisory (GHSA-c9j4-9m59-847w) detailing the incident and remediation steps. Users should verify the extension version installed in Visual Studio Code or OpenVSX and remove any instances of version 18.95.0. Refer to the official Nx Console postmortem and GitHub advisory for detailed patch instructions and indicators of compromise.
