CVE-2026-24423
Overview
This vulnerability is an unauthenticated remote code execution flaw caused by missing authentication controls in the ConnectToHub API method of SmarterTools SmarterMail. The root cause is that the ConnectToHub function accepts and executes OS commands obtained from an external HTTP server without validating the source or requiring authentication. This affects SmarterMail versions prior to build 9511, specifically the ConnectToHub API component responsible for hub communication.
Vulnerability Description
SmarterTools SmarterMail versions prior to build 9511 contain an unauthenticated remote code execution vulnerability in the ConnectToHub API method. The attacker could point the SmarterMail to the malicious HTTP server, which serves the malicious OS command. This command will be executed by the vulnerable application.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can execute arbitrary operating system commands on the affected SmarterMail server by exploiting this vulnerability, leading to full system compromise. No authentication or user interaction is required, enabling remote attackers to gain control over the mail server environment. This can result in data theft, service disruption, or use of the compromised server as a foothold for lateral movement within the network.
Solution
Apply the latest SmarterMail update to build 9511 or later as provided by SmarterTools. Detailed patch instructions and release notes are available at https://www.smartertools.com/smartermail/release-notes/current. No official workarounds are documented; therefore, timely application of the vendor-supplied patch is critical to remediate this vulnerability.
