CVE-2026-23760
Overview
This vulnerability is an authentication bypass in the password reset API of SmarterTools SmarterMail prior to build 9511. The flaw arises from the force-reset-password endpoint allowing unauthenticated requests without validating existing credentials or reset tokens. The affected component is the system administrator password reset functionality within the SmarterMail API.
Vulnerability Description
SmarterTools SmarterMail versions prior to build 9511 contain an authentication bypass vulnerability in the password reset API. The force-reset-password endpoint permits anonymous requests and fails to verify the existing password or a reset token when resetting system administrator accounts. An unauthenticated attacker can supply a target administrator username and a new password to reset the account, resulting in full administrative compromise of the SmarterMail instance. NOTE: SmarterMail system administrator privileges grant the ability to execute operating system commands via built-in management functionality, effectively providing administrative (SYSTEM or root) access on the underlying host.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can reset any system administrator password, gaining full administrative control of the SmarterMail instance. This access includes the ability to execute operating system commands via built-in management features, effectively granting SYSTEM or root-level access on the host machine. No authentication or user interaction is required, resulting in complete compromise of the mail server and potential lateral movement or data exfiltration within the affected environment.
Solution
Apply the official patch released by SmarterTools in SmarterMail build 9511 or later as documented in their current release notes at https://www.smartertools.com/smartermail/release-notes/current. The vendor has addressed the authentication bypass in the password reset API. Administrators should update affected SmarterMail installations to the fixed version to remediate this vulnerability.
