CVE-2025-3928
Overview
The vulnerability is a code injection flaw classified under CWE-94, arising from improper validation of user-supplied input that allows execution of arbitrary code. This flaw exists within the Commvault Web Server component where attackers can upload and execute webshells due to insufficient input sanitization. The root cause is the failure to restrict or validate executable content creation on the webserver, enabling malicious payload deployment by authenticated users.
Vulnerability Description
Commvault Web Server has an unspecified vulnerability that can be exploited by a remote, authenticated attacker. According to the Commvault advisory: "Webservers can be compromised through bad actors creating and executing webshells." Fixed in version 11.36.46, 11.32.89, 11.28.141, and 11.20.217 for Windows and Linux platforms. This vulnerability was added to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) Catalog on 2025-04-28.
Impact
An attacker with valid credentials can deploy and execute arbitrary webshells on the Commvault Web Server, enabling full remote code execution within the server environment. This access allows unauthorized system commands, data manipulation, and potential lateral movement within the network. The prerequisite is possession of an authenticated account with sufficient privileges to upload content. Successful exploitation can lead to complete compromise of the affected system and exposure of sensitive backup data, severely impacting business continuity and data confidentiality.
Solution
Apply the vendor-provided patches by upgrading Commvault Web Server to versions 11.36.46, 11.32.89, 11.28.141, or 11.20.217 as specified in the Commvault security advisory CV_2025_03_1. Detailed patching instructions and version-specific guidance are available at https://documentation.commvault.com/securityadvisories/CV_2025_03_1.html. No alternative workarounds are documented; timely application of these updates is critical to remediation.
