CVE-2025-25014
Overview
This vulnerability is a prototype pollution flaw occurring within Elastic Kibana's machine learning and reporting components. It arises from improper handling of crafted HTTP requests that manipulate JavaScript object prototypes, enabling modification of internal object properties. The affected feature is the HTTP interface processing requests to specific endpoints related to machine learning and reporting functionalities.
Vulnerability Description
A Prototype pollution vulnerability in Kibana leads to arbitrary code execution via crafted HTTP requests to machine learning and reporting endpoints.
Impact
An attacker with high privileges (PR:H) who can send network requests to Kibana's machine learning and reporting endpoints can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. This enables full compromise of the Kibana server, potentially leading to data exfiltration, service disruption, or lateral movement within the network. The attack requires no user interaction (UI:N) but does require authenticated access, as indicated by the CVSS vector.
Solution
Elastic has released security updates addressing this vulnerability in Kibana versions 8.17.6, 8.18.1, and 9.0.1 as detailed in their advisory ESA-2025-07 (https://discuss.elastic.co/t/kibana-8-17-6-8-18-1-or-9-0-1-security-update-esa-2025-07/377868). Users should upgrade to these fixed versions promptly. No workarounds are specified; applying the vendor-provided patches is the recommended remediation.
