CVE-2025-1974
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection flaw rooted in improper input validation within the ingress-nginx controller component of Kubernetes. Specifically, the ingress-nginx controller processes network traffic from the pod network without adequate authentication or sanitization, enabling execution of arbitrary commands. The flaw arises from the controller's handling of requests that can be manipulated by an unauthenticated attacker with pod network access, leading to unauthorized code execution within the controller's context.
Vulnerability Description
A security issue was discovered in Kubernetes where under certain conditions, an unauthenticated attacker with access to the pod network can achieve arbitrary code execution in the context of the ingress-nginx controller. This can lead to disclosure of Secrets accessible to the controller. (Note that in the default installation, the controller can access all Secrets cluster-wide.)
Impact
An attacker with access to the pod network can execute arbitrary code within the ingress-nginx controller without any authentication (CVSS vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N), enabling full compromise of the controller's privileges. This includes unauthorized disclosure of all Secrets accessible to the controller, potentially exposing sensitive credentials and configuration data cluster-wide. The vulnerability enables lateral movement and persistent access within the Kubernetes cluster, severely impacting confidentiality, integrity, and availability (C:H/I:H/A:H).
Solution
Apply the patches and updates provided by the Kubernetes project as detailed in the GitHub issue https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/131009. Upgrade the ingress-nginx controller to the fixed version specified in the advisory to eliminate the command injection vector. Follow the vendor's recommended configuration hardening to restrict pod network access and limit the controller's permissions to the minimum necessary scope.
