CVE-2025-0994
Overview
The vulnerability is a deserialization flaw in Trimble Cityworks and Cityworks with Office Companion affecting versions prior to 15.8.9 and 23.10 respectively. The root cause lies in insecure handling of serialized data within the web application hosted on Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS). Specifically, the deserialization process does not properly validate or sanitize input, allowing maliciously crafted serialized objects to be processed by the server component.
Vulnerability Description
Trimble Cityworks versions prior to 15.8.9 and Cityworks with office companion versions prior to 23.10 are vulnerable to a deserialization vulnerability. This could allow an authenticated user to perform a remote code execution attack against a customer’s Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) web server.
Impact
An attacker with valid authentication credentials can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code remotely on the IIS web server hosting Cityworks. This could lead to full system compromise, including unauthorized access to sensitive data and potential lateral movement within the network. The prerequisite is possession of an authenticated user account, which may be a low or high privilege user depending on the environment. Successful exploitation undermines the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system and its data.
Solution
Trimble has released security updates addressing this vulnerability in Cityworks version 15.8.9 and Cityworks with Office Companion version 23.10. Administrators should apply these updates promptly as detailed in the vendor advisory available at https://learn.assetlifecycle.trimble.com/i/1532182-cityworks-customer-communication-2025-02-05-docx/0?. No alternative workarounds are specified; patching to the fixed versions is the recommended remediation step.
