CVE-2024-9486
Overview
This vulnerability is an authentication bypass caused by the retention of default credentials during the image build process in Kubernetes Image Builder versions up to v0.1.37. The root cause lies in the Proxmox provider component, which fails to disable default root credentials when generating virtual machine images. Consequently, the resulting VM images contain enabled default credentials that compromise node security in Kubernetes clusters using these images.
Vulnerability Description
A security issue was discovered in the Kubernetes Image Builder versions <= v0.1.37 where default credentials are enabled during the image build process. Virtual machine images built using the Proxmox provider do not disable these default credentials, and nodes using the resulting images may be accessible via these default credentials. The credentials can be used to gain root access. Kubernetes clusters are only affected if their nodes use VM images created via the Image Builder project with its Proxmox provider.
Impact
An attacker with network access to nodes running VM images created via the vulnerable Image Builder Proxmox provider can authenticate using default credentials without any prior authentication or user interaction. This grants root-level access to the node, enabling full control over the system and potential lateral movement within the Kubernetes cluster. The vulnerability has a CVSS vector indicating network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and no user interaction, resulting in high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts.
Solution
Upgrade Kubernetes Image Builder to a version later than v0.1.37 where the Proxmox provider disables default credentials during image creation. Refer to the vendor advisory at https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/issues/128006 and apply the patch introduced in pull request https://github.com/kubernetes-sigs/image-builder/pull/1595. Follow the vendor’s instructions for rebuilding VM images to ensure default credentials are removed before deployment.

Full Analysis
A significant security issue has been identified within Kubernetes Image Builder versions up to v0.1.37, specifically concerning the handling of default credentials during the image build process. This vulnerability arises when virtual machine images are created using the Proxmox provider, which fails to disable default credentials. Consequently, any nodes that utilize these images may inadvertently expose themselves to unauthorized access via these unchanged default credentials. The implications of this oversight are severe, as attackers can leverage these credentials to gain root access to the affected nodes, potentially compromising the entire Kubernetes cluster.
The attack vectors associated with this vulnerability are particularly concerning due to the ease with which an attacker can exploit the situation. If an adversary can identify a Kubernetes cluster that employs images built with the vulnerable version of the Image Builder, they can attempt to access the nodes using the default credentials. This could be achieved through various means, such as network scanning, social engineering, or even insider threats. Once root access is obtained, an attacker could manipulate the cluster's resources, exfiltrate sensitive data, deploy malicious workloads, or disrupt services, leading to a cascade of negative consequences for the organization.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability is profound, especially for organizations that rely heavily on Kubernetes for their container orchestration needs. The potential for unauthorized access to critical infrastructure can lead to significant business risks, including data breaches, loss of customer trust, regulatory fines, and operational disruptions. Furthermore, the high CVSS score of 9.8 indicates that this vulnerability poses a critical threat, necessitating immediate attention from security teams. Organizations that fail to address this issue may find themselves not only facing technical challenges but also suffering from reputational damage and financial losses.
To effectively detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should adopt a multi-faceted approach. First, it is essential to audit existing Kubernetes clusters to identify any nodes that are running images built with the vulnerable version of the Image Builder. This can be accomplished through inventory management tools and security scanning solutions that assess the configuration of deployed images. Additionally, organizations should implement strict access controls and regularly review user permissions to minimize the risk of unauthorized access.
Moreover, updating to the latest version of the Kubernetes Image Builder that addresses this vulnerability is crucial. Organizations should establish a robust patch management process to ensure that all components of their Kubernetes environment are kept up to date. Furthermore, employing network segmentation and monitoring for unusual access patterns can help detect potential exploitation attempts early. By taking these proactive measures, organizations can significantly reduce their risk exposure and enhance their overall security posture against this critical vulnerability.
