CVE-2024-9264
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection and local file inclusion issue arising from insufficient sanitization of user input in SQL Expressions, an experimental feature in Grafana. The flaw occurs when user-supplied data is passed unsanitized to the embedded duckdb query engine within Grafana's SQL Expressions feature. The vulnerability specifically affects the SQL Expressions component when executing duckdb queries, relying on the presence of the duckdb binary in Grafana's execution environment.
Vulnerability Description
The SQL Expressions experimental feature of Grafana allows for the evaluation of `duckdb` queries containing user input. These queries are insufficiently sanitized before being passed to `duckdb`, leading to a command injection and local file inclusion vulnerability. Any user with the VIEWER or higher permission is capable of executing this attack. The `duckdb` binary must be present in Grafana's $PATH for this attack to function; by default, this binary is not installed in Grafana distributions.
Impact
An authenticated attacker with VIEWER or greater privileges can execute arbitrary commands on the host system and access local files by exploiting this vulnerability. This can lead to unauthorized data exposure, system compromise, or lateral movement within the environment. The attack requires low privileges (PR:L) and no user interaction (UI:N), with network access (AV:N) and results in complete confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact (C:H/I:H/A:H) as per the CVSS vector.
Solution
Grafana has addressed this vulnerability in version 11.0.1 as detailed in their security advisory at https://grafana.com/security/security-advisories/cve-2024-9264/. Users should upgrade to Grafana 11.0.1 or later to mitigate this issue. Additionally, administrators should verify the absence of the duckdb binary in the $PATH or restrict its presence to trusted environments as a temporary mitigation until patching is applied.
