CVE-2024-8517
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection flaw rooted in improper input validation and sanitization within SPIP's multipart file upload handling. The affected component fails to securely process crafted multipart HTTP requests, allowing injection of arbitrary operating system commands. The flaw exists in SPIP versions prior to 4.3.2, 4.2.16, and 4.1.18, specifically impacting the file upload processing mechanism.
Vulnerability Description
SPIP before 4.3.2, 4.2.16, and 4.1.18 is vulnerable to a command injection issue. A remote and unauthenticated attacker can execute arbitrary operating system commands by sending a crafted multipart file upload HTTP request.
Impact
A remote, unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary operating system commands on the server hosting SPIP, potentially gaining full control over the affected system. No authentication or user interaction is required (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N), enabling attackers to compromise confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the system. This could lead to data breaches, service disruption, or further lateral movement within the network.
Solution
Users should upgrade SPIP to version 4.3.2, 4.2.16, or 4.1.18 as detailed in the vendor advisory at https://blog.spip.net/Mise-a-jour-critique-de-securite-sortie-de-SPIP-4-3-2-SPIP-4-2-16-SPIP-4-1-18.html. These versions contain patches that properly sanitize multipart file upload inputs to prevent command injection. No alternative workarounds are specified; prompt application of the official update is recommended.
