CVE-2024-7954
Overview
This vulnerability is an arbitrary code execution flaw rooted in improper input validation within the porte_plume plugin of SPIP. Specifically, crafted HTTP requests are not correctly sanitized, allowing injection of executable PHP code. The affected component is the porte_plume plugin in SPIP versions prior to 4.30-alpha2, 4.2.13, and 4.1.16, which processes user-supplied data without adequate security controls.
Vulnerability Description
The porte_plume plugin used by SPIP before 4.30-alpha2, 4.2.13, and 4.1.16 is vulnerable to an arbitrary code execution vulnerability. A remote and unauthenticated attacker can execute arbitrary PHP as the SPIP user by sending a crafted HTTP request.
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker can execute arbitrary PHP code on the SPIP server with the privileges of the SPIP user, enabling full control over the affected system. This can lead to data compromise, server manipulation, or further network penetration. The attack requires only network access to the vulnerable HTTP interface and no user interaction, as reflected by the CVSS vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N. The high severity (CVSS 9.8) underscores the critical impact of this flaw in real-world deployments.
Solution
Users should upgrade SPIP to versions 4.30-alpha2, 4.2.13, or 4.1.16 or later as detailed in the vendor advisory at https://blog.spip.net/Mise-a-jour-critique-de-securite-sortie-de-SPIP-4-3-0-alpha2-SPIP-4-2-13-SPIP-4.html. These versions include patches that properly sanitize input in the porte_plume plugin, eliminating the code injection vector. No additional workarounds are documented; applying the official update is the recommended remediation.
