CVE-2024-5706
Overview
This vulnerability is an improper control of resource identifiers (CWE-99) affecting Hitachi Vantara Pentaho Data Integration & Analytics. The root cause is the insufficient validation or restriction of JNDI identifiers used during the creation of Community Dashboards. This flaw allows identifiers to reference resources outside the intended scope, compromising the integrity of resource referencing within the application.
Vulnerability Description
The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not restrict or incorrectly restricts the input before it is used as an identifier for a resource that may be outside the intended sphere of control. (CWE-99) Hitachi Vantara Pentaho Data Integration & Analytics versions before 10.2.0.0 and 9.3.0.9, including 8.3.x, do not restrict JNDI identifiers during the creation of Community Dashboards, allowing control of system-level data sources. An attacker could gain access to or modify sensitive data or system resources. This could allow access to protected files or directories including configuration files and files containing sensitive information, which can lead to remote code execution by unauthorized users.
Impact
An attacker with at least low-level privileges can exploit this vulnerability to access or modify sensitive system files and configuration data by controlling JNDI identifiers. This may lead to unauthorized disclosure of protected information and enable remote code execution within the system context. The attack requires network access and authenticated user privileges, as indicated by the CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N), allowing lateral movement and compromise of critical system resources.
Solution
Hitachi Vantara has addressed this vulnerability in Pentaho Data Integration & Analytics versions 10.2.0.0 and 9.3.0.9. Users should upgrade to these or later versions to mitigate the issue. Detailed patch instructions and advisory information are available at the vendor support page: https://support.pentaho.com/hc/en-us/articles/34296195570189--Resolved-Hitachi-Vantara-Pentaho-Data-Integration-Analytics-Improper-Control-of-Resource-Identifiers-Resource-Injection-Versions-before-10-2-0-0-and-9-3-0-9-including-8-3-x-Impacted-CVE-2024-5706
