CVE-2024-55956
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection flaw arising from improper input validation in the default Autorun directory feature of Cleo Harmony, VLTrader, and LexiCom products prior to version 5.8.0.24. The affected component automatically executes scripts placed in the Autorun directory without authentication or sanitization, allowing arbitrary Bash or PowerShell commands to be injected and executed on the host system. The root cause lies in the unsafe handling of files in the Autorun directory, enabling unauthorized command execution.
Vulnerability Description
In Cleo Harmony before 5.8.0.24, VLTrader before 5.8.0.24, and LexiCom before 5.8.0.24, an unauthenticated user can import and execute arbitrary Bash or PowerShell commands on the host system by leveraging the default settings of the Autorun directory.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can execute arbitrary operating system commands on the host, enabling full control over the affected system. This includes the ability to manipulate files, install malware, or disrupt services. No user interaction or credentials are required, allowing remote attackers to gain system-level access. The compromise can lead to data breaches, service outages, and lateral movement within the network, severely impacting business operations.
Solution
Users should upgrade Cleo Harmony, VLTrader, and LexiCom to version 5.8.0.24 or later as detailed in the Cleo Product Security Advisory at https://support.cleo.com/hc/en-us/articles/28408134019735-Cleo-Product-Security-Advisory-CVE-Pending. The vendor has addressed the unsafe Autorun directory handling in these updates. Administrators are advised to follow the vendor's patch instructions precisely to mitigate this vulnerability.
