CVE-2024-53677
Overview
This vulnerability is a path traversal flaw within the file upload logic of Apache Struts, specifically affecting the legacy FileuploadInterceptor component. The root cause lies in improper validation and sanitization of file upload parameters, allowing manipulation of file paths. This flaw exists in Apache Struts versions from 2.0.0 up to, but not including, 6.4.0, compromising the integrity of the file upload mechanism.
Vulnerability Description
File upload logic in Apache Struts is flawed. An attacker can manipulate file upload params to enable paths traversal and under some circumstances this can lead to uploading a malicious file which can be used to perform Remote Code Execution. This issue affects Apache Struts: from 2.0.0 before 6.4.0. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 6.4.0 at least and migrate to the new file upload mechanism https://struts.apache.org/core-developers/file-upload . If you are not using an old file upload logic based on FileuploadInterceptor your application is safe. You can find more details in https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/WW/S2-067
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can leverage this vulnerability to upload arbitrary files to the server, potentially leading to remote code execution. This enables full system compromise, including unauthorized access, data theft, or service disruption. The attack requires no user interaction and can be performed remotely, making it highly exploitable in exposed environments.
Solution
Users should upgrade Apache Struts to version 6.4.0 or later, which replaces the legacy file upload mechanism with a secure alternative. Applications not using the old FileuploadInterceptor are not vulnerable. Detailed remediation steps and upgrade instructions are provided in the official Apache advisory at https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/WW/S2-067.
