CVE-2024-49035
Overview
This vulnerability is an improper access control flaw in Microsoft Partner Center's web application hosted on Partner.Microsoft.com. The root cause is the failure to properly enforce privilege restrictions on certain network-accessible endpoints, allowing unauthorized elevation of privileges. The affected component is the Partner Center's access control mechanism governing user privilege validation.
Vulnerability Description
An improper access control vulnerability in Partner.Microsoft.com allows an a unauthenticated attacker to elevate privileges over a network.
Impact
An attacker without any authentication or user interaction can exploit this vulnerability to elevate their privileges within Microsoft Partner Center. This unauthorized privilege escalation can enable access to sensitive partner data and management functions, potentially leading to data breaches or unauthorized administrative actions. The flaw facilitates lateral movement within the Partner Center environment, increasing the risk of broader compromise of partner resources and services.
Solution
Microsoft has released an official security update addressing this improper access control issue in Microsoft Partner Center. Administrators should apply the patch detailed in the Microsoft Security Response Center advisory available at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2024-49035. The update enforces proper privilege validation on affected endpoints. Organizations are advised to follow the vendor's guidance precisely to mitigate this vulnerability.
