CVE-2024-42489
Overview
The vulnerability is a command injection caused by missing output escaping in XWiki Pro Macros' rendering components. Specifically, the Viewpdf macro fails to properly sanitize user-controllable inputs within its HTML conversion process, allowing injection of arbitrary commands. This flaw affects the CKEditor.HTMLConverter page and related macros such as Viewppt, which share similar rendering logic.
Vulnerability Description
Pro Macros provides XWiki rendering macros. Missing escaping in the Viewpdf macro allows any user with view right on the `CKEditor.HTMLConverter` page or edit or comment right on any page to perform remote code execution. Other macros like Viewppt are vulnerable to the same kind of attack. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.10.1.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker with at least view rights on the CKEditor.HTMLConverter page or edit/comment rights on any page can execute arbitrary code remotely on the server hosting XWiki Pro Macros. This enables full compromise of the application environment, including data exfiltration and service disruption. The vulnerability requires no user interaction and has a CVSS vector indicating network attack with no privileges or user interaction (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N), and impacts confidentiality, integrity, and availability at the highest level.
Solution
Upgrade XWiki Pro Macros to version 1.10.1 or later, which contains the fix for this vulnerability as detailed in the GitHub security advisory GHSA-cfq3-q227-7j65. The patch addresses the escaping issues in the Viewpdf macro rendering XML files, specifically in xwiki-pro-macros-ui/src/main/resources/Confluence/Macros/Viewpdf.xml. Follow the vendor's instructions in the advisory and commit 199553c84901999481a20614f093af2d57970eba for applying the update.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability in Pro Macros, specifically within the Viewpdf macro, stems from a lack of proper input sanitization and escaping mechanisms. This oversight allows attackers to inject malicious code into the rendering process, leading to remote code execution (RCE). The flaw is particularly concerning as it affects users with view rights on the `CKEditor.HTMLConverter` page or those with edit or comment permissions on any page. This means that even users with relatively low privileges can exploit the vulnerability, making it a significant security risk for organizations using this product. Similar vulnerabilities have been identified in other macros, such as Viewppt, indicating a broader issue within the macro framework.
Attack vectors for this vulnerability are varied and can be executed through multiple scenarios. An attacker could craft a malicious document or payload that, when processed by the Viewpdf macro, triggers the execution of arbitrary code on the server. This could involve embedding the payload within a PDF or other document types that are rendered by the macro. Once the code is executed, the attacker could gain unauthorized access to sensitive data, manipulate server configurations, or even pivot to other systems within the network. The ease of exploitation, combined with the potential for significant impact, makes this vulnerability particularly dangerous in environments where users are granted varying levels of access.
The real-world implications of this vulnerability are profound, especially for organizations that rely on Pro Macros for document rendering and collaboration. The ability for an attacker to execute arbitrary code can lead to data breaches, loss of intellectual property, and damage to the organization's reputation. Additionally, the financial repercussions could be severe, including costs associated with incident response, legal liabilities, and potential regulatory fines. Businesses that fail to address this vulnerability may find themselves at a competitive disadvantage, as customers increasingly prioritize security in their vendor selection processes.
To detect and mitigate the risks associated with this vulnerability, organizations should implement a multi-faceted approach. Regular security assessments and penetration testing can help identify potential weaknesses in the macro framework. Organizations should also monitor user activity closely, particularly focusing on those with elevated permissions, to detect any unusual behavior that could indicate exploitation attempts. Furthermore, updating to the latest version of Pro Macros, which includes the necessary patches, is crucial for mitigating this vulnerability. Educating users about the risks associated with document rendering and the importance of not opening untrusted files can also help reduce the attack surface.
In conclusion, the vulnerability within Pro Macros presents a significant threat to organizations utilizing this software for document rendering. The combination of inadequate input validation and the potential for remote code execution creates a high-risk scenario that can lead to severe consequences. By understanding the technical details, potential attack vectors, and implementing robust detection and mitigation strategies, organizations can better protect themselves against the exploitation of this vulnerability. As the cybersecurity landscape continues to evolve, proactive measures and timely updates will be essential in safeguarding sensitive information and maintaining operational integrity.
