CVE-2024-41710
Overview
This vulnerability is a command injection flaw arising from insufficient parameter sanitization during the boot process of Mitel 6800, 6900, and 6900w Series SIP Phones including the 6970 Conference Unit. The root cause lies in improper handling of arguments passed to system commands within the device firmware, allowing manipulation of boot-time parameters. The affected component is the firmware's boot sequence processing module, which fails to validate input arguments securely.
Vulnerability Description
A vulnerability in the Mitel 6800 Series, 6900 Series, and 6900w Series SIP Phones, including the 6970 Conference Unit, through R6.4.0.HF1 (R6.4.0.136) could allow an authenticated attacker with administrative privilege to conduct an argument injection attack, due to insufficient parameter sanitization during the boot process. A successful exploit could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary commands within the context of the system.
Impact
An attacker with administrative access can execute arbitrary system commands on the affected SIP phones, potentially leading to full device compromise. This includes the ability to manipulate device configuration, intercept or alter communications, and disrupt telephony services. The prerequisite is possession of administrative credentials or equivalent access, restricting exploitation to insiders or compromised accounts. Successful exploitation can result in service disruption and unauthorized control over telephony infrastructure components.
Solution
Mitel has released security advisory 24-0019 addressing this issue. Administrators should upgrade affected devices to firmware versions later than R6.4.0.HF1 (R6.4.0.136) as specified in the advisory. Detailed patch instructions and firmware downloads are available at Mitel's official security advisories page: https://www.mitel.com/support/security-advisories/mitel-product-security-advisory-24-0019. No specific workarounds are documented; applying the vendor-supplied firmware update is the recommended mitigation.
