CVE-2024-39907
Overview
The vulnerability consists of multiple SQL injection flaws within the 1Panel web-based Linux server management control panel. These injections arise from insufficient input validation and improper sanitization of user-supplied SQL queries. The affected components include database interaction modules responsible for processing user inputs in various web interface endpoints.
Vulnerability Description
1Panel is a web-based linux server management control panel. There are many sql injections in the project, and some of them are not well filtered, leading to arbitrary file writes, and ultimately leading to RCEs. These sql injections have been resolved in version 1.10.12-tls. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for these issues.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker with network access can exploit these SQL injection vulnerabilities to perform arbitrary file writes, leading to remote code execution on the affected server. This enables full system compromise, including data exfiltration, service disruption, and lateral movement within the network. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N) indicates exploitation requires no privileges or user interaction, increasing the severity and ease of attack.
Solution
Users of 1Panel must upgrade to version 1.10.12-tls or later, where the vendor has addressed all identified SQL injection vulnerabilities. Detailed patch and mitigation instructions are available in the official security advisory at https://github.com/1Panel-dev/1Panel/security/advisories/GHSA-5grx-v727-qmq6. No alternative workarounds are provided by the vendor.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability in the web-based Linux server management control panel known as 1Panel arises from multiple SQL injection flaws that compromise the integrity of the application. SQL injection is a well-known attack vector that allows an attacker to manipulate database queries by injecting malicious SQL code into input fields. In this case, the inadequately filtered inputs enable an attacker to execute arbitrary SQL commands, which can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data or manipulation of the database. The severity of this vulnerability is underscored by its potential to facilitate arbitrary file writes, ultimately leading to remote code execution (RCE). This capability allows attackers to execute arbitrary commands on the server, significantly escalating the risk associated with the initial SQL injection.
Attack vectors for exploiting this vulnerability are varied and can be executed through several means, including web forms, API endpoints, or any user input fields that interact with the database. An attacker could craft a malicious input that, when processed by the application, alters the intended SQL query. For instance, by injecting specific SQL commands, an attacker could retrieve sensitive information such as user credentials or configuration files. Furthermore, the ability to write arbitrary files could allow an attacker to place malicious scripts on the server, which could then be executed to gain further control over the system. This exploitation could be performed remotely, making it particularly dangerous for organizations that rely on 1Panel for server management without adequate security measures in place.
The real-world impact of such vulnerabilities can be profound, particularly for businesses that utilize 1Panel for managing critical infrastructure. The potential for remote code execution means that an attacker could gain full control over the server, leading to data breaches, service disruptions, or even complete system compromise. This not only jeopardizes the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of sensitive data but also poses significant reputational risks. Organizations could face legal repercussions, regulatory fines, and loss of customer trust, which can have long-lasting effects on their business operations. The high CVSS score of 9.8 indicates that this vulnerability is critical, necessitating immediate attention and remediation.
To detect and mitigate the risks associated with this vulnerability, organizations should prioritize upgrading to the latest version of 1Panel, specifically version 1.10.12-tls, where these SQL injection flaws have been addressed. Regularly updating software and applying security patches is a fundamental best practice in cybersecurity. Additionally, employing web application firewalls (WAFs) can help filter out malicious traffic and provide an additional layer of defense against SQL injection attacks. Implementing input validation and sanitization techniques within the application can further reduce the risk of such vulnerabilities. Organizations should also conduct regular security assessments and penetration testing to identify and remediate potential weaknesses in their systems proactively.
In conclusion, the vulnerabilities present in the 1Panel management control panel highlight the critical need for robust security practices in web applications. The potential for SQL injection to lead to arbitrary file writes and remote code execution poses significant risks to organizations, necessitating immediate action to mitigate these threats. By prioritizing software updates, employing defensive technologies, and fostering a culture of security awareness, organizations can better protect themselves against the evolving landscape of cyber threats.
