CVE-2024-38368
Overview
This vulnerability is an authentication bypass affecting the CocoaPods trunk server component responsible for pod ownership management. The root cause lies in improper handling of pod ownership states during migration from the pre-2014 pull request workflow to the trunk workflow, allowing unclaimed or ownerless pods to be claimed without proper authentication. The affected feature is the pod claiming and ownership management system on trunk.cocoapods.org.
Vulnerability Description
trunk.cocoapods.org is the authentication server for the CoacoaPods dependency manager. A vulnerability affected older pods which migrated from the pre-2014 pull request workflow to trunk. If the pods had never been claimed then it was still possible to do so. It was also possible to have all owners removed from a pod, and that made the pod available for the same claiming system. This was patched server-side in commit 71be5440906b6bdfbc0bcc7f8a9fec33367ea0f4 in September 2023.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can claim ownership of unclaimed or ownerless pods, enabling them to publish malicious updates or remove legitimate owners. This unauthorized control over pods can lead to supply chain compromise, allowing injection of malicious code into widely used dependencies. No authentication or user interaction is required to exploit this flaw, increasing the risk of widespread impact on projects depending on affected pods.
Solution
The vulnerability was remediated by a server-side patch applied in September 2023, referenced in commit 71be5440906b6bdfbc0bcc7f8a9fec33367ea0f4 on the CocoaPods trunk repository. Users and administrators should ensure they are using the patched version of trunk.cocoapods.org. Detailed patch information and remediation steps are available in the official CocoaPods security advisory GHSA-j483-qm5c-7hqx and the related blog post at https://blog.cocoapods.org/Claim-Your-Pods.
