CVE-2024-38077
Overview
This vulnerability is a heap-based buffer overflow (CWE-122) in the Windows Remote Desktop Licensing Service. The flaw arises from improper handling of input data within the licensing protocol, leading to memory corruption. The affected component is the Remote Desktop Licensing Service on Microsoft Windows Server platforms, which processes licensing requests over the network.
Vulnerability Description
Windows Remote Desktop Licensing Service Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code with system privileges on affected Windows Server machines. Exploitation requires only network access to the Remote Desktop Licensing Service, as no user interaction or authentication is necessary (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N). Successful exploitation could lead to full system compromise, enabling data theft, service disruption, or lateral movement within enterprise environments.
Solution
Microsoft has released security updates addressing this vulnerability for Windows Server 2019 and earlier affected versions. Administrators should apply the patches as detailed in the Microsoft Security Response Center advisory at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2024-38077. The update replaces the vulnerable licensing service components to correct input validation and prevent buffer overflow conditions. No alternative workarounds are specified by Microsoft.
