CVE-2024-37901
Overview
This vulnerability is a remote code execution flaw arising from improper handling of user-editable content in XWiki Platform. Specifically, the platform's mechanism allowing users with edit rights to add instances of certain classes (`XWiki.SearchSuggestConfig` and `XWiki.SearchSuggestSourceClass`) to pages or user profiles lacks sufficient validation or sandboxing. This enables injection of executable code within the wiki runtime environment, affecting the core wiki page editing and user profile components.
Vulnerability Description
XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform offering runtime services for applications built on top of it. Any user with edit right on any page can perform arbitrary remote code execution by adding instances of `XWiki.SearchSuggestConfig` and `XWiki.SearchSuggestSourceClass` to their user profile or any other page. This compromises the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the whole XWiki installation. This vulnerability has been patched in XWiki 14.10.21, 15.5.5 and 15.10.2.
Impact
An authenticated user with edit rights can execute arbitrary code remotely, compromising the entire XWiki installation's confidentiality, integrity, and availability. This enables unauthorized data access, modification, or service disruption. The attack requires low privileges (edit rights) and no user interaction beyond page editing, with network-level access to the wiki interface. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) confirms network attack vector, low complexity, and high privileges leading to full system compromise.
Solution
Apply the security patches released by XWiki in versions 14.10.21, 15.5.5, or 15.10.2 to remediate this vulnerability. Refer to the XWiki GitHub security advisory GHSA-h63h-5c77-77p5 for detailed patch instructions and commit references (0b135760514fef73db748986a3311f3edd4a553b and 742cd4591642be4cdcaf68325f17540e0934e64e). Upgrading to these versions or later is the recommended mitigation approach.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability in the XWiki Platform arises from improper handling of user permissions, specifically allowing users with edit rights to manipulate configurations related to search suggestions. By exploiting this flaw, an attacker can insert instances of `XWiki.SearchSuggestConfig` and `XWiki.SearchSuggestSourceClass` into their user profile or any editable page. This capability enables the execution of arbitrary code on the server, leading to a significant breach of the platform's security. The underlying issue lies in the lack of adequate validation and sanitization of user inputs, which is a common pitfall in web applications that rely heavily on user-generated content.
Attack vectors for this vulnerability are straightforward, as they primarily hinge on the permissions granted to users within the XWiki environment. An attacker with edit rights can craft a malicious configuration that, when executed, could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, manipulation of existing content, or even complete takeover of the XWiki instance. Scenarios may include embedding malicious scripts that could be triggered by other users accessing the compromised page or by the server itself during routine operations. The ease of exploitation, combined with the potential for widespread impact, makes this vulnerability particularly concerning for organizations utilizing the XWiki Platform.
The real-world implications of this vulnerability can be severe, particularly for businesses that rely on XWiki for documentation, collaboration, or knowledge management. The compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability can lead to data breaches, loss of critical information, and disruption of services. For instance, an attacker could exfiltrate proprietary information or manipulate documents to mislead users, resulting in reputational damage and financial losses. Furthermore, the high CVSS score indicates that the vulnerability poses a significant risk, necessitating immediate attention from organizations that have deployed the affected versions of the platform.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should implement a multi-faceted approach. Regular security audits and code reviews can help identify and rectify similar issues before they can be exploited. Additionally, employing web application firewalls (WAFs) can provide an extra layer of defense by filtering out malicious requests. Organizations should also ensure that user permissions are tightly controlled, granting edit rights only to trusted individuals and regularly reviewing these permissions to prevent unauthorized access. Finally, it is crucial to apply the latest patches provided by XWiki, as updates often contain important security fixes that address known vulnerabilities.
In conclusion, the vulnerability within the XWiki Platform underscores the importance of robust security practices in web applications, particularly those that allow user-generated content. Organizations must remain vigilant, employing proactive measures to detect and mitigate potential threats while ensuring that their software is kept up to date. By understanding the nature of this vulnerability and its potential impact, businesses can better protect themselves against the evolving landscape of cyber threats.
