CVE-2024-31465
Overview
This vulnerability is a server-side code injection caused by improper handling of user-editable page content within the XWiki Platform. Specifically, the platform allows authenticated users with edit rights to add an object of type `XWiki.SearchSuggestSourceClass` to their user profile or any page, which is then processed insecurely. The root cause lies in the unsafe deserialization or execution of this object type within the wiki's page editing and rendering components, affecting versions from 5.0-rc-1 up to but not including 14.10.20, 15.5.4, and 15.9-rc-1.
Vulnerability Description
XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform. Starting in version 5.0-rc-1 and prior to versions 14.10.20, 15.5.4, and 15.9-rc-1, any user with edit right on any page can execute any code on the server by adding an object of type `XWiki.SearchSuggestSourceClass` to their user profile or any other page. This compromises the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the whole XWiki installation. This vulnerability has been patched in XWiki 14.10.20, 15.5.4 and 15.10 RC1. As a workaround, manually apply the patch to the document `XWiki.SearchSuggestSourceSheet`.
Impact
An attacker with edit rights on any page can execute arbitrary code on the server, enabling full compromise of the XWiki installation's confidentiality, integrity, and availability. This requires authenticated access with edit privileges but no user interaction beyond that. Exploitation can lead to data breaches, service disruption, or unauthorized control over the server environment. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) indicates network attack with low complexity, requiring privileges but no user interaction, and results in complete system compromise.
Solution
Apply the security patches released in XWiki Platform versions 14.10.20, 15.5.4, and 15.10 RC1 as detailed in the GitHub security advisory GHSA-34fj-r5gq-7395. For systems unable to upgrade immediately, manually apply the patch to the document `XWiki.SearchSuggestSourceSheet` as a workaround. Detailed patch instructions and source code changes are available in the referenced GitHub commits 0317a3aa78065e66c86fc725976b06bf7f9b446e and 2740974c32dbb7cc565546d0f04e2374b32b36f7.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability in the XWiki Platform allows any user with edit rights on any page to execute arbitrary code on the server by manipulating their user profile or any other page to include an object of type `XWiki.SearchSuggestSourceClass`. This exploitation occurs due to improper validation of user input, which enables an attacker to introduce malicious code that the server subsequently executes. The flaw is particularly concerning as it affects multiple versions of the platform, specifically those from version 5.0-rc-1 up to versions 14.10.20, 15.5.4, and 15.9-rc-1. The lack of stringent access controls and input validation mechanisms creates a significant attack surface, allowing unauthorized code execution that can compromise the entire installation.
Attack vectors for this vulnerability are straightforward, as any user with edit permissions can exploit it without needing advanced technical skills. An attacker could create a malicious object and embed it within a page or their user profile, leading to the execution of arbitrary commands on the server. This could be done through a simple web interface, making it accessible to a wide range of potential attackers, including those with minimal technical expertise. Scenarios might involve an insider threat, where a disgruntled employee exploits their legitimate access, or an external attacker who gains edit rights through social engineering tactics. Once the code is executed, the attacker could manipulate data, exfiltrate sensitive information, or even take control of the server, leading to further exploitation.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability is profound, particularly for organizations that rely on the XWiki Platform for collaboration and documentation. The compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability can lead to severe business risks, including data breaches, loss of intellectual property, and reputational damage. For organizations that handle sensitive information, the consequences could extend to regulatory penalties and loss of customer trust. Furthermore, the potential for widespread disruption to services and operations could result in significant financial losses. The ease of exploitation amplifies these risks, as even a single successful attack could have cascading effects across the organization.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should prioritize updating their XWiki installations to the patched versions: 14.10.20, 15.5.4, or 15.10 RC1. Regular patch management practices should be implemented to ensure that all software components are up to date and vulnerabilities are addressed promptly. Additionally, organizations should review user permissions and limit edit rights to only those who absolutely need them. Implementing robust input validation and sanitization measures can also help mitigate the risk of code injection attacks. Monitoring for unusual activity, such as unexpected changes to user profiles or page content, can provide early warning signs of exploitation attempts.
In conclusion, the vulnerability in the XWiki Platform poses a significant threat to organizations utilizing this software. The ability for any user with edit rights to execute arbitrary code on the server underscores the importance of stringent access controls and regular software updates. By adopting comprehensive detection and mitigation strategies, organizations can protect themselves from the potential fallout of such vulnerabilities, ensuring the security and integrity of their systems and data.
