CVE-2024-28986
Overview
This vulnerability is a Java deserialization flaw in SolarWinds Web Help Desk that arises from insecure handling of serialized objects. The root cause is improper validation of user-supplied serialized data, allowing maliciously crafted objects to be deserialized. The affected component is the Web Help Desk application prior to version 12.8.3, specifically in its Java backend deserialization routines.
Vulnerability Description
SolarWinds Web Help Desk was found to be susceptible to a Java Deserialization Remote Code Execution vulnerability that, if exploited, would allow an attacker to run commands on the host machine. While it was reported as an unauthenticated vulnerability, SolarWinds has been unable to reproduce it without authentication after thorough testing. However, out of an abundance of caution, we recommend all Web Help Desk customers apply the patch, which is now available.
Impact
An attacker can execute arbitrary commands on the host system remotely without requiring authentication, enabling full system compromise. This can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, disruption of service, and lateral movement within the network. The low complexity of exploitation combined with no user interaction makes it a critical threat to organizations running vulnerable versions of the product.
Solution
SolarWinds has released a hotfix for Web Help Desk version 12.8.3 (Hotfix 1) addressing this vulnerability. Customers are advised to apply this patch immediately as detailed in the SolarWinds security advisory at https://www.solarwinds.com/trust-center/security-advisories/CVE-2024-28986. Additional guidance and patch instructions are available via SolarWinds support article WHD-12-8-3-Hotfix-1.
