CVE-2024-27348
Overview
This vulnerability is a remote command execution flaw rooted in insufficient access control within the gremlin component of Apache HugeGraph-Server. The issue arises from the lack of authentication enforcement on the POST /gremlin endpoint, allowing unauthenticated input to be processed directly by the server's command execution logic. The affected component is the graph query interface implemented in Java environments prior to version 1.3.0.
Vulnerability Description
RCE-Remote Command Execution vulnerability in Apache HugeGraph-Server.This issue affects Apache HugeGraph-Server: from 1.0.0 before 1.3.0 in Java8 & Java11 Users are recommended to upgrade to version 1.3.0 with Java11 & enable the Auth system, which fixes the issue.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary commands on the Apache HugeGraph-Server host, leading to full compromise of the graph database system. No user interaction or authentication is required to trigger the flaw, enabling remote attackers to manipulate or exfiltrate sensitive graph data and potentially pivot within the network. This can result in data breaches, service disruption, and unauthorized control over the underlying infrastructure.
Solution
Users should upgrade Apache HugeGraph-Server to version 1.3.0 or later, which includes fixes for this vulnerability and requires enabling the authentication system. Detailed patch and configuration instructions are available in the vendor advisory at https://lists.apache.org/thread/nx6g6htyhpgtzsocybm242781o8w5kq9. Enabling user authentication as documented at https://hugegraph.apache.org/docs/config/config-authentication/#configure-user-authentication is also recommended to mitigate unauthorized access.
