CVE-2024-20401
Overview
This vulnerability is a file overwrite flaw arising from improper validation of email attachments processed by the content scanning and message filtering components of Cisco Secure Email Gateway. The root cause lies in the insecure handling of crafted email attachments when file analysis and content filters are enabled, allowing manipulation of the underlying operating system's file system. The affected component is the attachment processing mechanism within the email gateway's content scanning feature.
Vulnerability Description
A vulnerability in the content scanning and message filtering features of Cisco Secure Email Gateway could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to overwrite arbitrary files on the underlying operating system. This vulnerability is due to improper handling of email attachments when file analysis and content filters are enabled. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending an email that contains a crafted attachment through an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to replace any file on the underlying file system. The attacker could then perform any of the following actions: add users with root privileges, modify the device configuration, execute arbitrary code, or cause a permanent denial of service (DoS) condition on the affected device. Note: Manual intervention is required to recover from the DoS condition. Customers are advised to contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) to help recover a device in this condition.
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker can overwrite arbitrary files on the underlying operating system by sending a crafted email attachment, enabling actions such as adding root-level users, modifying device configurations, executing arbitrary code, or causing permanent denial of service conditions. No authentication or user interaction is required (CVSS vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N). This can lead to complete compromise of the affected device and disruption of email security services.
Solution
Cisco has released an advisory (cisco-sa-esa-afw-bGG2UsjH) providing detailed patch and mitigation instructions for Cisco Secure Email Gateway. Customers should apply the vendor-provided updates that address the attachment handling flaw in the content scanning and message filtering features. In case of a denial of service condition, Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) support is recommended for recovery. Refer to the Cisco Security Advisory at https://sec.cloudapps.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/cisco-sa-esa-afw-bGG2UsjH for full remediation guidance.
