CVE-2024-20017
Overview
This vulnerability is an out-of-bounds write caused by improper input validation within the wlan service of MediaTek chipsets MT6890, MT7915, MT7916, MT7981, and MT7986. The flaw arises when the wlan service processes unchecked input data, leading to memory corruption. The affected component is the wlan service module in the MediaTek software development kit and related firmware versions.
Vulnerability Description
In wlan service, there is a possible out of bounds write due to improper input validation. This could lead to remote code execution with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation Patch ID: WCNCR00350938; Issue ID: MSV-1132.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability remotely without user interaction to execute arbitrary code on affected devices. This results in full control over the wlan service, potentially allowing compromise of the device’s operating environment, data exfiltration, or disruption of wireless network functions. The severity enables attackers to bypass normal execution privileges, leading to complete system compromise and lateral movement within the network.
Solution
Apply the patch identified by MediaTek as Patch ID WCNCR00350938, referenced in advisory MSV-1132, which addresses the input validation flaw in the wlan service. This patch is applicable to affected MediaTek chipsets MT6890, MT7915, MT7916, MT7981, and MT7986 and corresponding SDK and OpenWrt firmware versions 19.07.0 and 21.02.0. For detailed patch instructions and updates, consult MediaTek’s official product security bulletin at https://corp.mediatek.com/product-security-bulletin/March-2024.
