CVE-2024-1708
Overview
This vulnerability is a path traversal flaw in ConnectWise ScreenConnect versions 23.9.7 and earlier. It arises from insufficient validation of user-supplied file path inputs, allowing traversal outside intended directories. The affected component improperly handles file system paths, enabling attackers to manipulate file access within the application environment.
Vulnerability Description
ConnectWise ScreenConnect 23.9.7 and prior are affected by path-traversal vulnerability, which may allow an attacker the ability to execute remote code or directly impact confidential data or critical systems.
Impact
An attacker with at least high-privileged authenticated access can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code remotely or access sensitive files on the server. This enables unauthorized disclosure of confidential data and potential full system compromise. The attack requires user interaction or valid credentials with elevated privileges, allowing lateral movement or disruption of critical systems managed by ScreenConnect.
Solution
ConnectWise has released version 23.9.8 of ScreenConnect to address this vulnerability. Administrators should upgrade to ScreenConnect 23.9.8 or later as detailed in the vendor's security bulletin at https://www.connectwise.com/company/trust/security-bulletins/connectwise-screenconnect-23.9.8. No alternative workarounds are specified; applying the official patch is the recommended remediation step.
