CVE-2024-12854
Overview
This vulnerability is an arbitrary file upload flaw caused by inadequate file type validation in the Garden Gnome Package WordPress plugin. The affected component is the automatic extraction functionality for uploaded 'ggpkg' files. The plugin fails to properly verify the file contents before processing, allowing unauthorized file types to be uploaded and extracted on the server.
Vulnerability Description
The Garden Gnome Package plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary file uploads due to missing file type validation in the functionality that automatically extracts 'ggpkg' files that have been uploaded in all versions up to, and including, 2.3.0. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Author-level access and above, to upload arbitrary files on the affected site's server which may make remote code execution possible.
Impact
An attacker with at least Author-level authentication can upload arbitrary files to the server, potentially including executable code. This capability may allow remote code execution on the affected WordPress site, leading to full site compromise, data theft, or service disruption. The vulnerability requires authenticated access (PR:L) but no user interaction (UI:N), and is exploitable over the network (AV:N) with low attack complexity (AC:L), as reflected in the CVSS vector.
Solution
Users should upgrade the Garden Gnome Package plugin to a version later than 2.3.0 where the file upload validation issue has been fixed. Detailed patch information and version updates are documented in the WordPress plugin changelog and the Wordfence advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/6bcfc8f1-e962-4ad7-8a9d-89ce5c9022b6. No alternative workarounds are specified; applying the vendor-supplied patch is required to remediate this issue.
