CVE-2024-11281
Overview
This vulnerability is a privilege escalation flaw caused by insufficient validation of the 'logged_in_user_id' parameter within the WooCommerce Point of Sale plugin for WordPress. The root cause lies in the plugin's failure to properly verify user identity when option values are empty, allowing manipulation of user email addresses. The affected component is the user account management functionality in versions up to and including 6.1.0 of the plugin.
Vulnerability Description
The WooCommerce Point of Sale plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to privilege escalation in all versions up to, and including, 6.1.0. This is due to insufficient validation on the 'logged_in_user_id' value when option values are empty and the ability for attackers to change the email of arbitrary user accounts. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to change the email of arbitrary user accounts, including administrators, and reset their password to gain access to the account.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can change the email address of any user, including administrators, enabling them to reset passwords and gain full account access. This requires no user interaction or prior authentication (CVSS vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N). The consequence is a complete compromise of user accounts, potentially leading to unauthorized administrative control over the WordPress site and exposure or manipulation of sensitive data.
Solution
Users of the Webkul WooCommerce Point of Sale plugin should upgrade to version 6.1.1 or later, where this vulnerability is addressed. Detailed patch information and remediation steps are available in the Wordfence advisory at https://www.wordfence.com/threat-intel/vulnerabilities/id/2a0671b1-1414-4315-8a2d-bd1aabe091a4. No official workaround is provided; immediate updating is recommended to mitigate the risk.
