CVE-2023-48788
Overview
This vulnerability is a SQL injection flaw caused by improper neutralization of special elements in SQL commands within the Fortinet FortiClient Enterprise Management Server (EMS). The root cause lies in insufficient input validation or sanitization of user-supplied data, specifically in network packet headers processed by the EMS. Affected components include FortiClientEMS versions 7.2.0 through 7.2.2 and 7.0.1 through 7.0.10, where crafted packets are parsed without adequate filtering, enabling injection of malicious SQL code.
Vulnerability Description
A improper neutralization of special elements used in an sql command ('sql injection') in Fortinet FortiClientEMS version 7.2.0 through 7.2.2, FortiClientEMS 7.0.1 through 7.0.10 allows attacker to execute unauthorized code or commands via specially crafted packets.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can execute arbitrary SQL commands on the FortiClientEMS database by sending crafted network packets, enabling unauthorized access to sensitive endpoint management data and potential execution of administrative commands. This can lead to full compromise of the EMS database, exposure of confidential information, and unauthorized control over endpoint configurations. No user interaction or valid credentials are required, allowing remote exploitation over the network.
Solution
Fortinet has released security updates addressing this SQL injection vulnerability in FortiClientEMS versions 7.2.3 and later, as well as 7.0.11 and later. Administrators should apply these patches promptly. Detailed patch instructions and advisory information are available at Fortinet's official PSIRT page: https://fortiguard.com/psirt/FG-IR-24-007. No specific workarounds are recommended beyond upgrading to the fixed versions.
