CVE-2023-48692
Overview
This vulnerability is a memory overflow issue caused by improper bounds checking within the Azure RTOS NetX Duo TCP/IP stack. The flaw arises from buffer management errors in network protocol handlers including ICMP, TCP, SNMP, DHCP, NAT, and FTP components. These affected modules process incoming network packets without adequate validation, leading to memory corruption in versions 6.2.1 and earlier.
Vulnerability Description
Azure RTOS NetX Duo is a TCP/IP network stack designed specifically for deeply embedded real-time and IoT applications. An attacker can cause remote code execution due to memory overflow vulnerabilities in Azure RTOS NETX Duo. The affected components include processes/functions related to icmp, tcp, snmp, dhcp, nat and ftp in RTOS v6.2.1 and below. The fixes have been included in NetX Duo release 6.3.0. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker with network access can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on affected devices. This enables full compromise of embedded systems running vulnerable versions, potentially leading to data breaches, disruption of IoT operations, or lateral movement within a network. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) indicates high impact with no privileges or user interaction required but a high attack complexity.
Solution
Users must upgrade Azure RTOS NetX Duo to version 6.3.0 or later, where the memory overflow vulnerabilities in ICMP, TCP, SNMP, DHCP, NAT, and FTP handlers are resolved. Detailed patch instructions and advisories are available at the official GitHub security advisory: https://github.com/azure-rtos/netxduo/security/advisories/GHSA-m2rx-243p-9w64. No known workarounds exist, so timely application of the update is critical.
