CVE-2023-4863
Overview
This vulnerability is a heap buffer overflow occurring within the libwebp image decoding library integrated into Google Chrome. The root cause is an out-of-bounds memory write triggered by improper handling of crafted WebP image data embedded in HTML content. The flaw resides in the memory management routines of libwebp prior to version 1.3.2, affecting Chrome versions before 116.0.5845.187 and related Fedora and Debian distributions.
Vulnerability Description
Heap buffer overflow in libwebp in Google Chrome prior to 116.0.5845.187 and libwebp 1.3.2 allowed a remote attacker to perform an out of bounds memory write via a crafted HTML page. (Chromium security severity: Critical)
Impact
An attacker can exploit this vulnerability remotely by enticing a user to open a crafted web page, resulting in arbitrary code execution within the context of the browser process. No prior authentication is necessary, but user interaction to visit the malicious page is required. Successful exploitation can lead to full compromise of the browser, enabling data theft, manipulation of web content, or further system compromise depending on the environment and sandboxing.
Solution
Google Chrome users should update to version 116.0.5845.187 or later as detailed in the official Chrome stable channel update announcement (https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2023/09/stable-channel-update-for-desktop_11.html). Fedora distributions have incorporated libwebp 1.3.2 or higher in Fedora 37, 38, and 39 releases. Debian users should apply the corresponding security updates for Debian Linux 10.0. Refer to the linked vendor advisories for precise patching instructions and version verification.
