CVE-2023-48365
Overview
This vulnerability is an improper validation flaw involving HTTP header processing within Qlik Sense Enterprise for Windows. The root cause is an incomplete fix for a previous issue, allowing manipulation of HTTP requests by tunneling them through the repository application's backend server. The affected component is the HTTP request handling mechanism of the repository application, which fails to correctly validate and sanitize incoming HTTP headers, enabling unauthorized request execution.
Vulnerability Description
Qlik Sense Enterprise for Windows before August 2023 Patch 2 allows unauthenticated remote code execution, aka QB-21683. Due to improper validation of HTTP headers, a remote attacker is able to elevate their privilege by tunneling HTTP requests, allowing them to execute HTTP requests on the backend server that hosts the repository application. The fixed versions are August 2023 Patch 2, May 2023 Patch 6, February 2023 Patch 10, November 2022 Patch 12, August 2022 Patch 14, May 2022 Patch 16, February 2022 Patch 15, and November 2021 Patch 17. NOTE: this issue exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2023-41265.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary HTTP requests on the backend repository server, effectively elevating privileges and potentially executing remote code. No authentication or user interaction is required to trigger the exploit. This can lead to full system compromise, unauthorized data access, and lateral movement within the affected environment, severely impacting confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the Qlik Sense deployment.
Solution
Apply Qlik's official security updates as detailed in their advisory at https://community.qlik.com/t5/Official-Support-Articles/Critical-Security-fixes-for-Qlik-Sense-Enterprise-for-Windows/tac-p/2120510. Specifically, upgrade to August 2023 Patch 2 or one of the alternative fixed versions: May 2023 Patch 6, February 2023 Patch 10, November 2022 Patch 12, August 2022 Patch 14, May 2022 Patch 16, February 2022 Patch 15, or November 2021 Patch 17. Follow the vendor's patch installation instructions to fully remediate the vulnerability.
