CVE-2023-46243
Overview
This vulnerability is a code injection flaw (CWE-94) in the XWiki Platform that allows execution of arbitrary Groovy scripts due to insufficient input validation. The flaw exists in the content editing functionality where user-supplied input in the content parameter is improperly handled, enabling execution of embedded Groovy code. The affected component is the wiki content editing endpoint that processes document content updates.
Vulnerability Description
XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform offering runtime services for applications built on top of it. In affected versions it's possible for a user to execute any content with the right of an existing document's content author, provided the user have edit right on it. A crafted URL of the form ` /xwiki/bin/edit//?content=%7B%7Bgroovy%7D%7Dprintln%28%22Hello+from+Groovy%21%22%29%7B%7B%2Fgroovy%7D%7D&xpage=view` can be used to execute arbitrary groovy code on the server. This vulnerability has been patched in XWiki versions 14.10.6 and 15.2RC1. Users are advised to update. There are no known workarounds for this issue.
Impact
An attacker with edit permissions on a document can execute arbitrary Groovy code on the server, potentially leading to full system compromise, data exfiltration, or service disruption. This requires authenticated access with edit rights but no user interaction beyond accessing the crafted URL. The vulnerability has a CVSS vector indicating network attack complexity is low, privileges required are low, and it impacts confidentiality, integrity, and availability at a critical level.
Solution
Users should upgrade XWiki Platform to version 14.10.6 or later, or 15.2RC1 or later, as these versions contain the patch addressing this vulnerability. Detailed remediation instructions and advisory information are available at the official XWiki GitHub security advisory GHSA-g2qq-c5j9-5w5w and the related Jira ticket XWIKI-20385. No workarounds are provided by the vendor.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability present in the XWiki Platform allows for the execution of arbitrary Groovy code on the server by users who possess edit rights on existing documents. This issue arises from improper validation of user input, specifically when crafting URLs that manipulate the content being processed by the application. The exploitation of this vulnerability is facilitated through a specially crafted URL that includes Groovy code embedded within the content parameter. When executed, this code can perform actions on the server with the same privileges as the document's original author, thereby bypassing standard security measures and potentially leading to unauthorized access or control over the application.
Attack vectors associated with this vulnerability are particularly concerning due to the ease with which an attacker can exploit it. An individual with edit rights could craft a malicious URL and share it with other users, or even use social engineering tactics to trick users into clicking on the link. Once the crafted URL is accessed, the server processes the Groovy code, executing it in the context of the application. This could lead to a variety of malicious outcomes, including data exfiltration, system manipulation, or even complete server compromise. The potential for exploitation is exacerbated in environments where users are granted excessive permissions, as the attack does not require advanced technical skills, making it accessible to a broader range of malicious actors.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability can be significant, particularly for organizations that rely on the XWiki Platform for critical operations. If exploited, an attacker could gain unauthorized access to sensitive information or disrupt services, leading to operational downtime. The business risks associated with such an incident include financial losses, reputational damage, and potential legal ramifications, especially if sensitive data is exposed or compromised. Furthermore, the presence of this vulnerability could lead to increased scrutiny from stakeholders and regulatory bodies, particularly in industries that are subject to strict data protection regulations.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should prioritize updating their XWiki installations to the patched versions, specifically 14.10.6 and 15.2RC1. Regularly reviewing user permissions is also essential to ensure that only trusted individuals have edit rights to documents, thereby minimizing the risk of exploitation. Implementing robust input validation and sanitization measures can further reduce the likelihood of malicious code execution. Additionally, organizations should consider employing web application firewalls (WAFs) and intrusion detection systems (IDS) to monitor for suspicious activity and potential exploitation attempts. Regular security audits and penetration testing can help identify and address vulnerabilities before they can be exploited by malicious actors.
In conclusion, the vulnerability within the XWiki Platform poses a serious threat to organizations utilizing this software. The ability to execute arbitrary Groovy code with elevated privileges can lead to significant security breaches and operational disruptions. By understanding the technical details, potential attack vectors, and real-world implications, organizations can take proactive measures to protect their systems. Timely updates, stringent access controls, and comprehensive security strategies are essential to mitigate the risks associated with this vulnerability and safeguard sensitive information.
