CVE-2023-45144
Overview
This vulnerability is a combination of cross-site scripting (XSS) and syntax injection within the identityOAuth parameters processed by the xwikisas identity-oauth-ui package. The root cause lies in insufficient input validation and sanitization of GET request parameters, allowing injection of malicious scripts and XWiki syntax. The affected component is the OAuth login mechanism that processes these parameters, enabling execution of injected code within the XWiki environment.
Vulnerability Description
com.xwiki.identity-oauth:identity-oauth-ui is a package to aid in building identity and service providers based on OAuth authorizations. When a user logs in via the OAuth method, the identityOAuth parameters sent in the GET request is vulnerable to cross site scripting (XSS) and XWiki syntax injection. This allows remote code execution via the groovy macro and thus affects the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the whole XWiki installation. The issue has been fixed in Identity OAuth version 1.6. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability and users are advised to upgrade.
Impact
An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by crafting malicious GET requests with specially crafted identityOAuth parameters. This leads to execution of arbitrary code via the Groovy macro, compromising confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the entire XWiki installation. The attack requires no user interaction or privileges and can result in full system compromise, data exfiltration, or service disruption. The CVSS vector confirms network attack vector, low attack complexity, no privileges, and no user interaction required (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N).
Solution
Users should upgrade to Identity OAuth version 1.6 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed as per the GitHub security advisory GHSA-h2rm-29ch-wfmh. The vendor-provided patch is available in commit d805d3154b17c6bf455ddf5deb0a3461a3833bc6. No known workarounds exist, so immediate upgrade is recommended to mitigate the issue.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability associated with the identity-oauth-ui package presents a significant security risk due to its susceptibility to cross-site scripting (XSS) and XWiki syntax injection. This flaw arises when a user logs in using the OAuth method, allowing malicious actors to manipulate the identityOAuth parameters transmitted in the GET request. The exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to remote code execution through the groovy macro, which is a powerful feature within the XWiki environment. By leveraging this flaw, attackers can inject arbitrary code, compromising the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the entire XWiki installation. The technical intricacies of this vulnerability highlight the importance of secure coding practices, particularly in the handling of user input and the validation of parameters in web applications.
Attack vectors for this vulnerability are diverse and can be executed through various means. An attacker could craft a malicious URL that includes the manipulated identityOAuth parameters and entice a user to click on it, potentially through phishing tactics or social engineering. Once the user is tricked into logging in via the OAuth method with the malicious link, the attacker can execute arbitrary code on the server, leading to unauthorized access and control over the XWiki instance. Additionally, the exploitation can occur without the need for user interaction if the attacker can find a way to inject the malicious payload into a trusted source, such as a third-party application or service that interacts with the XWiki platform. This versatility in attack vectors underscores the critical need for vigilance in web application security.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability can be profound, particularly for organizations that rely on XWiki for collaboration and content management. Successful exploitation could lead to unauthorized data access, data manipulation, or even complete system compromise. The business risks associated with such an incident include loss of sensitive information, reputational damage, and potential legal ramifications stemming from data breaches. Furthermore, the financial implications of remediation efforts, including incident response, system recovery, and potential regulatory fines, can be substantial. Organizations must recognize that the ramifications extend beyond immediate technical concerns to broader business continuity and stakeholder trust.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should prioritize upgrading to the patched version of the identity-oauth-ui package, which addresses the identified security flaws. Regularly updating software components is a fundamental aspect of maintaining a secure environment. Additionally, implementing web application firewalls (WAFs) can help filter out malicious requests and provide an additional layer of protection against XSS attacks. Conducting comprehensive security assessments, including penetration testing and code reviews, can also identify potential vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. User education is another critical component; training users to recognize phishing attempts and suspicious links can significantly reduce the likelihood of successful exploitation.
In conclusion, the vulnerability within the identity-oauth-ui package poses a serious threat to the security posture of organizations utilizing XWiki. Its potential for remote code execution through XSS and syntax injection can lead to significant operational and reputational damage. By understanding the technical details, attack vectors, and real-world implications, organizations can better prepare themselves to defend against such threats. Proactive measures, including timely updates, robust detection strategies, and user awareness initiatives, are essential to safeguarding against this and similar vulnerabilities in the future.
