CVE-2023-4224
Overview
This vulnerability is an unrestricted file upload flaw located in the Chamilo LMS component handling AJAX requests at /main/inc/ajax/dropbox.ajax.php. The root cause is insufficient validation of uploaded files by authenticated users with learner role privileges, allowing upload of arbitrary file types including executable PHP scripts. The affected feature is the file upload functionality within the dropbox module of Chamilo LMS versions up to and including v1.11.24.
Vulnerability Description
Unrestricted file upload in `/main/inc/ajax/dropbox.ajax.php` in Chamilo LMS <= v1.11.24 allows authenticated attackers with learner role to obtain remote code execution via uploading of PHP files.
Impact
An attacker with authenticated learner-level access can upload and execute arbitrary PHP code on the server, leading to remote code execution. This can enable full system compromise, data exfiltration, or service disruption. The exploit requires valid user credentials with learner privileges and network access to the web application. According to the CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N), the attack is network-based, requires low complexity, and no user interaction beyond authentication.
Solution
Chamilo LMS users should upgrade to a version later than v1.11.24 where this vulnerability is patched. The vendor advisory at https://support.chamilo.org/projects/chamilo-18/wiki/security_issues#Issue-129-2023-09-04-Critical-impact-Moderate-risk-Authenticated-users-may-gain-unauthenticated-RCE-CVE-2023-4223CVE-2023-4224CVE-2023-4225CVE-2023-4226 provides detailed patch instructions. Relevant patches have been committed to the official repository, including commits 6f32625a012d5de2dfe8edbccb4ed14a85e310d4, f3d62b65ad60d68096c2674d5695339f04de0b8a, and e864127a440c2cab0eb62c113a04e2e904543a1f, which implement proper file validation and upload restrictions.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability in Chamilo Learning Management System (LMS) arises from an unrestricted file upload feature within the `dropbox.ajax.php` script. This flaw permits authenticated users, specifically those with learner roles, to upload arbitrary files, including potentially malicious PHP scripts. The lack of proper validation and sanitization of uploaded files means that an attacker can exploit this functionality to upload a PHP file that contains executable code. Once uploaded, this file can be executed on the server, leading to remote code execution, which poses a significant security risk.
Exploitation of this vulnerability can occur through several attack vectors. An attacker with a valid learner account can leverage the file upload feature to send a crafted PHP file to the server. After successfully uploading the file, the attacker can access it via a direct URL, executing the code contained within. This could lead to a range of malicious activities, including the installation of web shells, data exfiltration, or further compromise of the server environment. The ease of exploitation makes this vulnerability particularly concerning, as it does not require advanced technical skills beyond gaining access to a learner account.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability can be severe, particularly for educational institutions and organizations using Chamilo LMS. Successful exploitation could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, including personal information of students and staff, course materials, and administrative credentials. Furthermore, the compromised system could be used as a launchpad for further attacks on the institution's network, potentially affecting other connected systems and services. The business risk is amplified by the potential for reputational damage, regulatory penalties, and the financial costs associated with incident response and remediation efforts.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should implement several strategies. First, it is crucial to conduct a thorough review of the file upload functionality to ensure that only allowed file types are permitted. This can be achieved by implementing strict file type validation and content inspection to prevent the upload of executable files. Additionally, employing web application firewalls (WAFs) can help identify and block malicious upload attempts. Regular security audits and penetration testing should also be conducted to identify and remediate vulnerabilities proactively. Finally, organizations should ensure that their Chamilo LMS installations are kept up to date with the latest security patches and updates to minimize exposure to known vulnerabilities.
In conclusion, the unrestricted file upload vulnerability in Chamilo LMS presents a significant risk to organizations that utilize this platform. The potential for remote code execution through the exploitation of this flaw underscores the importance of robust security practices, including proper file handling, continuous monitoring, and timely updates. By adopting a proactive security posture, organizations can better protect themselves against the threats posed by such vulnerabilities and safeguard their sensitive information and resources.
