CVE-2023-37909
Overview
This vulnerability is a server-side script injection rooted in improper input sanitization within the XWiki Platform's user profile editing feature. The flaw allows arbitrary script macro execution because user-supplied content is not correctly escaped before evaluation. The affected component is the user profile editor, specifically handling script macros such as Groovy and Python within wiki pages.
Vulnerability Description
XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform offering runtime services for applications built on top of it. Starting in version 5.1-rc-1 and prior to versions 14.10.8 and 15.3-rc-1, any user who can edit their own user profile can execute arbitrary script macros including Groovy and Python macros that allow remote code execution including unrestricted read and write access to all wiki contents. This has been patched in XWiki 14.10.8 and 15.3-rc-1 by adding proper escaping. As a workaround, the patch can be manually applied to the document `Menu.UIExtensionSheet`; only three lines need to be changed.
Impact
An attacker with authenticated access and edit rights to their user profile can execute arbitrary server-side scripts, resulting in full remote code execution. This includes unrestricted read and write access to all wiki content, enabling data exfiltration, modification, or destruction. The vulnerability requires low privileges (PR:L) but no user interaction beyond profile editing and is exploitable remotely over the network (AV:N) without UI interaction (UI:N), as reflected in the CVSS vector.
Solution
Upgrade XWiki Platform to version 14.10.8 or later, or 15.3-rc-1 or later, where the vulnerability is patched by proper escaping in the Menu.UIExtensionSheet document. As an immediate workaround, manually apply the three-line patch to the Menu.UIExtensionSheet document as detailed in the GitHub advisory (https://github.com/xwiki/xwiki-platform/security/advisories/GHSA-v2rr-xw95-wcjx) and commit 9e8f080094333dec63a8583229a3799208d773be. Refer to XWIKI-20746 in the XWiki JIRA for additional context and instructions.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability in the XWiki Platform arises from improper handling of user profile editing permissions, specifically allowing users to execute arbitrary script macros, including Groovy and Python. This flaw exists in versions starting from 5.1-rc-1 and prior to 14.10.8 and 15.3-rc-1. The core issue lies in the lack of adequate input validation and escaping mechanisms, which enables users with profile editing capabilities to inject malicious scripts. Such scripts can lead to remote code execution, granting attackers unrestricted access to read and modify all content within the wiki. This vulnerability highlights the critical need for robust input sanitization in applications that allow user-generated content.
Attack vectors for this vulnerability are particularly concerning due to the ease with which an attacker can exploit it. A malicious user could create or modify their profile to include harmful scripts that execute when other users interact with the affected wiki. For instance, an attacker could embed a script that exfiltrates sensitive data or modifies existing wiki pages to include misleading or harmful information. Additionally, since the execution of these scripts occurs within the context of the wiki, the attacker could leverage the platform's permissions to escalate their privileges, potentially compromising the entire system. This scenario underscores the importance of understanding user roles and permissions in collaborative environments.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability can be severe, particularly for organizations that rely on the XWiki Platform for documentation, project management, or knowledge sharing. The ability to execute arbitrary code can lead to data breaches, loss of intellectual property, and significant reputational damage. Furthermore, the business risks extend beyond immediate financial loss; they include regulatory penalties for failing to protect sensitive information and the costs associated with incident response and recovery efforts. Organizations may also face disruptions in operations as they work to remediate the vulnerability and restore trust with their users.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should implement a multi-faceted approach. First, they should ensure that they are using the latest patched versions of the XWiki Platform, specifically 14.10.8 or 15.3-rc-1, which include necessary security enhancements. Regularly updating software is a fundamental practice in cybersecurity that helps protect against known vulnerabilities. Additionally, organizations should conduct thorough security audits and code reviews of their wiki implementations to identify any potential weaknesses in user input handling. Implementing strict user role management can also limit the ability of users to execute scripts, thereby reducing the attack surface.
In conclusion, the vulnerability within the XWiki Platform serves as a critical reminder of the importance of secure coding practices and the need for vigilant monitoring of user permissions. Organizations must prioritize the implementation of security measures that encompass both technical controls and user education to mitigate risks associated with such vulnerabilities. By fostering a culture of security awareness and maintaining up-to-date software, organizations can better protect themselves against the evolving landscape of cyber threats.
