CVE-2023-35182
Overview
This vulnerability is a remote code execution flaw rooted in improper handling of deserialization within the SolarWinds Access Rights Manager server component. Specifically, the ARM server processes untrusted input without sufficient validation or authentication, enabling exploitation through maliciously crafted data. The flaw resides in the server’s deserialization mechanism, classified under CWE-502, which allows arbitrary code execution due to unsafe object deserialization.
Vulnerability Description
The SolarWinds Access Rights Manager was susceptible to Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability can be abused by unauthenticated users on SolarWinds ARM Server.
Impact
An unauthenticated attacker with network access to the SolarWinds ARM server can execute arbitrary code remotely, gaining full control over the affected system. This can lead to unauthorized data access, system compromise, and potential lateral movement within the network. The attack requires no user interaction and exploits a network-accessible service, as indicated by the CVSS vector AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N, reflecting low complexity and no privileges required for exploitation.
Solution
SolarWinds has released Access Rights Manager version 2023.2.1 to address this vulnerability. Administrators should upgrade to this version or later as detailed in the SolarWinds security advisory at https://www.solarwinds.com/trust-center/security-advisories/CVE-2023-35182. The release notes specify that the update includes enhanced input validation and authentication checks on deserialization endpoints. No alternative workarounds are recommended; patching is the primary remediation step.
