CVE-2023-34102
Overview
This vulnerability is a type of input validation flaw affecting the polymorphic field type in the avo-hq avo Ruby on Rails admin panel framework. The root cause is the lack of backend validation for class names stored and used by the polymorphic field during record updates. This improper validation allows untrusted user input to control the classes operated on within the application logic, specifically in the record update workflow.
Vulnerability Description
Avo is an open source ruby on rails admin panel creation framework. The polymorphic field type stores the classes to operate on when updating a record with user input, and does not validate them in the back end. This can lead to unexpected behavior, remote code execution, or application crashes when viewing a manipulated record. This issue has been addressed in commit `ec117882d` which is expected to be included in subsequent releases. Users are advised to limit access to untrusted users until a new release is made.
Impact
An attacker with low-level privileges can exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code remotely or cause application crashes by supplying manipulated polymorphic field values. The attack requires authentication with at least limited privileges (PR:L) but no user interaction (UI:N) and can be performed over a network (AV:N). This can lead to unauthorized code execution within the application context, potentially compromising data integrity and availability, as reflected in the CVSS vector indicating low attack complexity and high impact on integrity and availability.
Solution
Users should upgrade avo-hq avo to versions including the fix from commit ec117882d, which is expected in releases following 3.0.0-pre12. Until patched, restrict access to the admin panel to trusted users only. Detailed patch information and advisory guidance can be found in the official avo security advisory GHSA-86h2-2g4g-29qx at https://github.com/avo-hq/avo/security/advisories/GHSA-86h2-2g4g-29qx and the corresponding commit at https://github.com/avo-hq/avo/commit/ec117882ddb1b519481bdd046dc3cfa4474e6e17.
