CVE-2023-29525
Overview
This vulnerability is a code injection flaw rooted in insufficient input validation and escaping of user-supplied data within the XWiki Platform. Specifically, the 'since' parameter in the /xwiki/bin/view/XWiki/Notifications/Code/LegacyNotificationAdministration endpoint fails to properly sanitize input, allowing injection of XWiki syntax. The affected component is the LegacyNotificationAdministration page handling notification code rendering and processing.
Vulnerability Description
XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform offering runtime services for applications built on top of it. Affected versions of xwiki are subject to code injection in the `since` parameter of the `/xwiki/bin/view/XWiki/Notifications/Code/LegacyNotificationAdministration` endpoint. This provides an XWiki syntax injection attack via the since-parameter, allowing privilege escalation from view to programming rights and subsequent code execution privilege. The vulnerability has been patched in XWiki 15.0-rc-1, 14.10.3, 14.4.8 and 14.10.3. Users are advised to upgrade. Users unable to upgrade may modify the page `XWiki.Notifications.Code.LegacyNotificationAdministration` to add the missing escaping. For versions < 14.6-rc-1 a workaround is to modify the file `<xwikiwebapp>/templates/distribution/eventmigration.wiki` to add the missing escaping.
Impact
An attacker with at least view-level privileges can exploit this flaw remotely over the network without user interaction to escalate privileges to programming rights and execute arbitrary code. This leads to full compromise of the XWiki instance, including unauthorized data access and potential service disruption. The vulnerability has a CVSS vector indicating network attack complexity is low, no user interaction is needed, and it affects confidentiality, integrity, and availability with high severity.
Solution
Users should upgrade XWiki Platform to versions 15.0-rc-1, 14.10.3, or 14.4.8 as detailed in the official GitHub security advisory GHSA-jgg7-w2rj-58cj. For users unable to upgrade, the vendor recommends applying a workaround by modifying the XWiki.Notifications.Code.LegacyNotificationAdministration page to add proper escaping. Additionally, for versions earlier than 14.6-rc-1, modifying the <xwikiwebapp>/templates/distribution/eventmigration.wiki file to include missing escaping is advised. Refer to the vendor commits at https://github.com/xwiki/xwiki-platform/commit/6d74e2e4aa03d19f0be385ab63ae9e0f0e90a766 and https://github.com/xwiki/xwiki-platform/commit/8e7c7f90f2ddaf067cb5b83b181af41513028754 for implementation details.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability in the XWiki Platform arises from improper handling of user input in the `since` parameter of the `/xwiki/bin/view/XWiki/Notifications/Code/LegacyNotificationAdministration` endpoint. This flaw allows for code injection attacks, specifically through XWiki syntax injection. When an attacker manipulates the `since` parameter, they can execute arbitrary code within the context of the application. The lack of adequate input validation and output encoding creates a pathway for malicious actors to escalate privileges from mere viewing rights to programming rights, ultimately enabling them to execute arbitrary code on the server. This vulnerability is particularly concerning given the platform's role in hosting and managing collaborative content, where trusted users may inadvertently expose sensitive functionalities.
Exploitation of this vulnerability can occur through various attack vectors. An attacker could craft a malicious request targeting the vulnerable endpoint, embedding harmful XWiki syntax within the `since` parameter. If successful, this would allow the attacker to gain elevated privileges, leading to unauthorized access to administrative functionalities. Scenarios may include an attacker gaining control over the wiki environment, manipulating content, or even deploying malware. The ease of exploitation, combined with the potential for significant privilege escalation, makes this vulnerability particularly attractive to cybercriminals seeking to compromise organizational data or disrupt services.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability can be severe, particularly for organizations relying on the XWiki Platform for critical operations. A successful attack could result in unauthorized access to sensitive information, data loss, or corruption, and potentially lead to a complete compromise of the wiki environment. The business risks extend beyond immediate data breaches; they include reputational damage, regulatory penalties, and the costs associated with incident response and recovery. Organizations may also face disruptions in service, impacting productivity and collaboration among users. The elevated CVSS score of 8.8 underscores the critical nature of this vulnerability, highlighting the urgency for affected users to address it promptly.
To detect and mitigate the risks associated with this vulnerability, organizations should adopt a multi-faceted approach. Regular security assessments, including vulnerability scanning and penetration testing, can help identify potential weaknesses in the XWiki Platform. Additionally, monitoring logs for unusual activity or unauthorized access attempts can provide early warning signs of exploitation. For immediate mitigation, users are strongly advised to upgrade to the patched versions of the XWiki Platform. For those unable to upgrade, implementing the recommended workarounds—such as modifying the `XWiki.Notifications.Code.LegacyNotificationAdministration` page to add missing escaping—can help reduce the attack surface. Organizations should also consider implementing a web application firewall (WAF) to filter out malicious requests targeting the vulnerable endpoint.
In conclusion, the vulnerability within the XWiki Platform represents a significant threat to organizations utilizing this collaborative tool. The potential for privilege escalation and code execution underscores the importance of proactive security measures. By understanding the technical details, recognizing exploitation scenarios, assessing real-world impacts, and implementing effective detection and mitigation strategies, organizations can better protect themselves against this and similar vulnerabilities in the future. The urgency of addressing such vulnerabilities cannot be overstated, as the consequences of inaction can be both immediate and far-reaching.
CSURFACE threat intelligence has detected a marked escalation in the Exploit Prediction Scoring System (EPSS) score for CVE-2023-29525, which has surged by over 180% to a level placing it within the top percentile of predicted exploitation likelihood. This rapid increase, accompanied by a strong upward trend over the past week, signals growing attacker interest and potential exploitation activity, despite the absence of newly reported exploit code in the wild. The heightened EPSS score reflects evolving attacker tactics that may leverage the vulnerability’s capacity for privilege escalation and remote code execution within the XWiki platform. For defenders, this shift elevates the urgency to monitor for exploitation attempts and reassess risk postures, particularly in environments where XWiki remains in use. Consequently, the threat level associated with CVE-2023-29525 should be considered significantly elevated, underscoring an increased probability of active exploitation attempts in the near term.
