CVE-2023-29524
Overview
This vulnerability is a code injection flaw rooted in improper access control within the XWiki Platform's Scheduler Application sheet page. Specifically, it allows users without scripting or programming privileges to inject and execute arbitrary Groovy code via the XWiki.SchedulerJobClass object in the user profile editor. The affected component is the SchedulerJobClass job script execution mechanism, which runs injected code in the server context upon viewing the job.
Vulnerability Description
XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform offering runtime services for applications built on top of it. It's possible to execute anything with the right of the Scheduler Application sheet page. A user without script or programming rights, edit your user profile with the object editor and add a new object of type XWiki.SchedulerJobClass, In "Job Script", groovy code can be added and will be executed in the server context on viewing. This has been patched in XWiki 14.10.3 and 15.0 RC1. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this issue.
Impact
An attacker with authenticated access and limited privileges can execute arbitrary code on the server, leading to full compromise of the application environment. No user interaction beyond profile editing is required, and the vulnerability can be exploited remotely over the network. The critical CVSS score (10.0) reflects the ability to achieve complete confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact without UI interaction and with low attack complexity.
Solution
To remediate this vulnerability, upgrade xwiki-platform to version 14.10.3 or later, or 15.0 RC1 and above, as detailed in the official security advisory at https://github.com/xwiki/xwiki-platform/security/advisories/GHSA-fc42-5w56-qw7h. The vendor recommends applying these patches promptly since no workarounds are available. Refer to JIRA issues XWIKI-20295 and XWIKI-20462 for additional technical information on the fix implementation.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability within the XWiki Platform arises from improper handling of user permissions related to the Scheduler Application. Specifically, it allows users without adequate scripting or programming rights to leverage the object editor to introduce a new object of type XWiki.SchedulerJobClass. This action enables the insertion of Groovy code into the "Job Script" field, which, upon execution, runs in the server context. This flaw is particularly concerning because it bypasses standard security measures that would typically prevent unauthorized code execution, thereby exposing the server to potential malicious activities.
Exploitation of this vulnerability can occur through various attack vectors. An attacker with minimal privileges can craft a malicious job script that, when triggered, executes arbitrary code on the server. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, manipulation of server configurations, or even complete system compromise. Scenarios may include an attacker creating a scheduled job that exfiltrates data, installs backdoors, or disrupts service availability. Given the nature of the XWiki Platform, which is often used for collaborative projects and knowledge sharing, the potential for widespread impact increases significantly, especially in environments where sensitive information is stored.
The real-world implications of this vulnerability are profound, particularly for organizations that rely on the XWiki Platform for critical operations. The high CVSS score of 8.8 indicates a significant risk, suggesting that successful exploitation could lead to severe consequences, including data breaches, loss of intellectual property, and reputational damage. Businesses may face regulatory scrutiny if sensitive data is compromised, leading to potential legal liabilities and financial penalties. Furthermore, the operational disruption caused by such an incident could result in loss of productivity and trust among users, compounding the overall impact on the organization.
To effectively detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations must prioritize upgrading to the patched versions of the XWiki Platform. Regularly monitoring and applying security updates is essential to safeguard against known vulnerabilities. Additionally, implementing strict access controls and regularly reviewing user permissions can help minimize the risk of unauthorized code execution. Organizations should also consider employing intrusion detection systems (IDS) that can monitor for unusual patterns of behavior indicative of exploitation attempts. Conducting regular security audits and penetration testing can further enhance an organization’s resilience against such vulnerabilities.
In conclusion, the vulnerability within the XWiki Platform underscores the critical importance of robust security practices in software development and deployment. The ability for unauthorized users to execute arbitrary code poses a significant threat to the integrity and confidentiality of systems. Organizations must remain vigilant, ensuring that they not only apply patches promptly but also adopt a comprehensive security posture that includes user education, access control, and continuous monitoring. By doing so, they can mitigate risks and protect their assets from potential exploitation.
Recent CSURFACE threat intelligence indicates a marked increase in the Exploit Prediction Scoring System (EPSS) score for CVE-2023-29524, rising by over one-third to place it near the top percentile of predicted exploitation likelihood. This upward adjustment reflects growing confidence in the vulnerability’s attractiveness to threat actors, despite no new exploit code or active campaigns being detected by our telemetry. The elevated EPSS suggests that adversaries may be prioritizing this flaw for future exploitation, potentially due to its high severity and the ease of executing arbitrary code via the Scheduler Application sheet page. For defenders, this shift signals an increased risk profile that warrants heightened vigilance and monitoring, as the window for exploitation may be narrowing. While the absence of confirmed exploit activity tempers immediate urgency, the trend underscores the importance of tracking this vulnerability closely as it could become a vector for sophisticated attacks, including those by opportunistic ransomware groups seeking lateral movement or persistence.
