CVE-2023-29519
Overview
This vulnerability is a code injection flaw within the XWiki Platform's attachment selector component. The root cause lies in improper input validation of the "property" field used in dashboard gadgets, allowing injection of executable code. The affected feature is the attachment selector gadget on user dashboards, which processes user-supplied input without adequate sanitization.
Vulnerability Description
XWiki Platform is a generic wiki platform offering runtime services for applications built on top of it. A registered user can perform remote code execution leading to privilege escalation by injecting the proper code in the "property" field of an attachment selector, as a gadget of their own dashboard. Note that the vulnerability does not impact comments of a wiki. The vulnerability has been patched in XWiki 13.10.11, 14.4.8, 14.10.2, 15.0-rc-1. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.
Impact
An attacker with a registered user account and no prior privileges can execute arbitrary code remotely by injecting payloads into the attachment selector's property field on their dashboard. This leads to privilege escalation and full compromise of the XWiki Platform instance. No user interaction beyond login is required, and the vulnerability is exploitable over the network without authentication barriers. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H) indicates high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability with no privileges needed.
Solution
Users should upgrade affected XWiki Platform instances to versions 13.10.11, 14.4.8, 14.10.2, or 15.0-rc-1 or later, as these releases contain patches addressing this vulnerability. Detailed remediation instructions and patch information are available in the official XWiki security advisory GHSA-3hjg-cghv-22ww and the corresponding commit 5e8725b4272cd3e5be09d3ca84273be2da6869c1. No known workarounds exist, so timely application of these updates is critical.

Full Analysis
The vulnerability in the XWiki Platform arises from improper handling of user input in the "property" field of an attachment selector. This flaw allows a registered user to inject arbitrary code, which can be executed on the server, leading to remote code execution (RCE). The code execution occurs within the context of the application, enabling an attacker to escalate privileges and potentially gain control over the entire wiki instance. The nature of this vulnerability highlights a significant weakness in input validation and sanitization processes, which are critical for maintaining the integrity and security of web applications.
Exploitation of this vulnerability can occur through various attack vectors. A malicious user could craft a specially formatted attachment that includes the injected code in the property field. Once uploaded, this attachment can be executed by the application, allowing the attacker to run arbitrary commands on the server. Scenarios may include an attacker using their own dashboard as a gadget to execute the code, effectively leveraging the trust that the application places in user-generated content. This exploitation method underscores the importance of robust input validation mechanisms to prevent unauthorized code execution.
The real-world impact of this vulnerability is substantial, particularly for organizations relying on the XWiki Platform for collaborative documentation and knowledge sharing. Successful exploitation could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, manipulation of wiki content, or even complete compromise of the underlying server. The business risks associated with such an incident include reputational damage, loss of intellectual property, and potential regulatory penalties, especially if sensitive information is exposed. Organizations may also face operational disruptions as they respond to and recover from an attack, further compounding the financial implications.
To detect and mitigate this vulnerability, organizations should prioritize upgrading to the patched versions of the XWiki Platform as soon as possible. Regularly applying security updates is essential in maintaining a secure environment. Additionally, implementing web application firewalls (WAFs) can help to filter out malicious input before it reaches the application layer. Continuous monitoring of application logs for unusual activity can also aid in early detection of potential exploitation attempts. Furthermore, conducting regular security assessments and penetration testing can help identify and remediate vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.
In conclusion, the vulnerability within the XWiki Platform presents a significant threat to organizations utilizing this wiki solution. The potential for remote code execution and privilege escalation underscores the critical need for effective input validation and timely application of security patches. By adopting a proactive security posture that includes regular updates, monitoring, and assessments, organizations can mitigate the risks associated with this and similar vulnerabilities, safeguarding their data and maintaining the trust of their users.
